Disagree. Sounds like up-tempo Creedence Clearwater...

Good stuff! Thanks!!!!
No matter what it is, you can label it whatever you like..nothing like a little "riffing" in your guitar
playing. Does not hurt a thing. Could use a little more of that these days.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Great tune.
I do like this version a little better. Nice n' nasty tone. 😛

I actually kind of agree with BigV that this isn't exactly the blues...although we may disagree on whether or not that is a bad thing. Is "uptempo Creedence Clearwater" supposed to a bad thing? I can see that description, but I don't see anything wrong with it.
Gary Clark and Derek are a good fit. They both have strong blues roots, but have spent most of their careers bristling against blues orthodoxy.

Check out Junior Kimbrough or RL Burnside and tell me that is not a blues groove. It is more Mississippi Juke Joint Trance Blues than standard Chicago Blues, but that is the blues to my ears, but to each their own especially when it comes to music - all good.

I flew down to LA to see the concert and it was fantastic. Derek and Gary really seemed to enjoy playing with each other. Gary's 2nd guitar player is also awesome. I had not seen Susan and Derek's new band for over 2 years and they have really improved and come together. Just a great group and I'm happy for their success.
I already miss the ABB but am so happy we still have Derek and Warren to listen to.
How lucky am I!!!!!!

mikesolo, RL & Junior played the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell & Fury Lewis, and the droning trance groove & rhythm is indeed it's distinction from the Delta blues, or Chicago blues, or whatever blues. And let's not forget Otha Turner's cane fife & drummers from the area as well. mix it all up, and holy smoked goats, you gots one helluva picnic!!!
I'm so glad the clans of the Turners, Burnsides, Kimbroughs, and Dickinsons are still carrying on the traditions, in their own Blue Rondo à la Turk ways!!!
WORLD BOOGIE IS COMING!!!!!!!

No, nothing "wrong" with it, just too simple. No real big talent here, no soloing prowess, the guy is not doing anything that thousands of others players are not. The "up-tempo Creedence" comment was directed towards my hearing a sped-up version of "Suzy Q"..one rhythm, played over and over, sort of a simplified "Bo-Diddley beat"... I just can't see or hear why some are labeling this guy as "great" or the next big thing. He keeps a good beat and is an adequate singer, but a blues man?......No way.

Crazy thought: perhaps if you heard more than one song.
Because not all of his stuff sounds exactly like that one song. His album Blak & Blu has some blues stuff, and I don't know how you've concluded that that song isn't the blues because it plainly is, and I'd say there are some Chicago- and Texas-ish tracks. There are also hip hop and R&B elements. He also did an EP of old songs stuff for a movie called Honeydripper and he has some acoustic tracks out there too, and I see he has a live album with covers of B.B. King, Albert Collins, Hendrix, and others on it. I don't think all of Blak & Blu works and the whole thing is a little too slick, but he's trying some things I haven't heard anybody do before and since so much of blues fandom is devoted to people who died decades ago/very old icons who have been doing the same thing for ages/people who are recreating styles from the mid-20th century without adding much, that's worth hearing.

While I think that the song falls under the umbrella of what most would call blues music,I agree with alot of what BIGV posted, and I've listened to both live/studio material by Clark.
Initially,I really liked what I heard, but over time I began to realize that i enjoyed the concept of what he was doing more than the music itself.Heck,a young blues guy...i thought and still think, thats great!
he's certainly capable...but I realized over time he was a decent rhythm player with heavy emphasis on distortion,a very limited lead player, and an average vocalist. Not a fact, but just my opinion.

The more I hear from Gary Clark Jr, the more disinterested I get.
Without the look, the presence, and an aggressively rigged up sound I'm not sure if there's much left.

And I agree with some of what you're saying, dadof2. I like what he's trying but I have mixed views about the execution. It interests me but doesn't thrill me so far. But one song isn't much of a basis for all of that and unlike CCR he doesn't put me to sleep. And I didn't know that using distortion, being a solid rhythm player and an OK singer were bad things. Live and learn! 😉

Fair enough and I have.

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Thanks for posting...John Lee Hooker(after Muddy and Wolf)is my favorite blues singer.
