Derek or Warren Covering ABB

I saw Warren last night at the Wall Street Rocks show. Always amazing and just heads and shoulders above anyone else on stage!
I was interested to see if he would cover any ABB tunes and assumed no. He played Soulshine but that's his baby.
How long a break do you think Warren or Derek will take before they work ABB tunes into their shows....if ever?

I think they both have already been doing that. Maybe not on a regular basis but i think they will continue to do so. Maybe they will increase playing them but especially Warren always wants that element of surprise in his Mule setlists. So i don't think you will be hearing the same ABB tune performed regularly.

An interviewer asked Derek about this recently and he said he expected they would work some ABB stuff into their setlist in time, but not right away. The TTB has been playing an acoustic version of Done Somebody Wrong lately- not an ABB original, but it's related. The Derek Trucks Band did Stand Back in different configurations and I'm sure TTB could kill that one, and sometimes they did other ABB songs with guests.

TTB did Statesboro Blues the other night in their acoustic set.
Others have mentioned it, but I saw them do Done Somebody Wrong in their semi-acoustic set in September and it was really good.
I could see Derek sticking to the old blues tunes the ABB made their own when he does play ABB tunes. Stormy Monday, Come On In My Kitchen, You Don't Love Me et al could get some treatment next.

TTB would also do a Blue Sky jam in Anyday - actually I saw them do that and throw in a Mountain Jam tease (suspect it's not the only time they did)

I just don't see Mule or TTB working in any songs written by the ABB for awhile.
I can see some of the covers the ABB does or maybe Mountain Jam on a Mule show, but I doubt a Midnight Rider, Melissa, Blue Sky, Whipping Post or anything like that shows up for either band at any point.

Really? With Mule having just played Dreams in recent months with Derek sitting in that seems questionable.

I could be wrong. I just don't see them playing the ABB radio staples. Maybe the instrumentals.

I expect a slight increase from each band. With the ABB "hiatus", there may be some curious ABB fans checking out the family bands. Just the possibility of hearing an ABB cover will help sell tickets for each band.

I don't think the possibility of hearing an ABB cover would sell a ticket. A guarantee of one might, but I assume that everyone who has gone to an ABB show who aren't just there to see Gregg have checked out Mule and TTB and have made their minds up if they are going to follow them from this point forward. It is not likely that a chance of an ABB cover every few shows isn't going to change that.
If the number of ABB covers increases in those two bands, it will be because those bands want to continue playing those songs, I doubt they would do it to sell more tickets.

He's talking about these bands doing a little more to appeal to ABB fans who are checking them out now that the ABB is done. Not every ABB fan is familiar with the Mule and TTB, but I don't think there's too much to be done there: the ABB has been winding down its tour dates for years and these bands are not new - Gov't Mule is calling this tour "20 Years Strong." We still think of TTB as a newish thing and their first gigs were at Wanee in 2010.

Right. If they do more ABB-related covers it'll be about paying tribute to the band's legacy and keeping the music going, not because they need more fans. Both of these bands can already sell out multi-show runs at the Beacon, after all.

I understand the point, but at this point that audience has to be very limited. I'd guess only the super casual ABB fan or the fan who only knows Gregg Allman as the ABB are the only ones who haven't checked out Derek and Warren's outside projects in one way or another.

Mule played Kind of Bird last Wed in Knoxville.

Mule did a few minute Liz Reed tease the other night. Warren also did (I can't remember the tune) an ABB song with Phil and Friends in Central Park this summer. IMHO Warren will show some of his feelings about the ABB by doing a bunch of their tunes - to me they are more suited to Mule than TTB

Kind of Bird, much like Soulshine, is a Warren song that the ABB did. That's a little different.

He wrote it with Dickey. Does that not make it an Allman Brothers song? What's the difference between that and say, True Gravity?

Warren also teases part of the blue sky solo when he does "i'll be the one"... pretty great imo

Derek's bands have played Don't Keep Me Wonderin, Stand Back, Statesboro Blues and Done Somebody Wrong (and maybe others). I'd expect him to sprinkle in some just as he has done for the past 5-6 years.
Warren should definitely play the ones he wrote or co-wrote for the ABB. I can see him doing others as well, particularly when the Mule have a guest.
And of course Kind of Bird and True Gravity are ABB songs. I view the classic blues covers they made their own as ABB songs too.
I bet we hear some ABB songs from both artists moving forward...maybe a little more regularly....we'll see. Jaimoe's band also breaks out at least one a show too and I bet that continues as well.

Nothing, Warren co-wrote that one too. Of course Warren might break out songs he helped write. That's not exactly the same thing as covering Melissa, Whipping Post, Midnight Rider and the big radio hits written by the band before he was in it. Instrumental nods and ABB related covers like Derek has done with "Done Somebody Wrong" are more likely than hearing "Southbound" at one of their shows.
I'm sure there will be occasional nods to the ABB from both Derek & Warren especially during instrumental solos. I just wouldn't expect full songs too often, nor right away.
I could be wrong, but that's my take on it.

Mule has been playing Kind of Bird for years.
In fact, I would bet that Mule has played it more than ABB since Warren left the band in the 90s.
The fact that Mule plays it is not a "nod" or "tribute" to the ABB or even covering the ABB - like someone mentioned, it's Warren's song.

My guess is its only a matter of time before Mule does a themed ABB show. Best guess would be in 5 years; health problems doing Dickey or Gregg in would make it sooner. But one day it will happen

PLQ, Phil Lesh Quintet, played "Blue Sky" with some regularity. Warren sang. Of course he had Jimmy Herring on guitar as a foil, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Gov't Mule adopt "Blue Sky".

I think both Warren and Derek are in the process of consciously distancing themselves from ABB material. They want to bring the attention to their own creations and they should since both have a great catalog of material.
I think they will rest the ABB stuff for a year and then periodically work it in. Of course, if Warren and Derek share the stage I think the odds of them playing an ABB song increase dramatically.
Love them both and will support both of their music and touring 100%.

So I guess if the Mule started playing Two of a Kind, Working on a Full House, it wouldn't be a Garth Brooks song.

Its a theory I've thrown out here for a long time - the quicker Warren and Derek are free from the ABB, the sooner they will throw in an occasional ABB number into their sets. When the Mule came through Jacksonville last month and Derek and the TTB sat in they played "Dreams." There were some "Les Brers" teases when I traveled to Cincy to see the Mule on Halloween. I always like it when the Mule rips into some Marshall Tucker Band myself.

I guess it depends on your point of view. Going by that then "Soulshine" is technically a Larry McCray cover since he recorded it first.

Not really the point, but I found it interesting the ABB continued to play Soulshine in 1997 after Warren left the band. I recall that Jack did not play the opening solo/melody the same way Warren does. I thought it was good.
