Defending Gregg's criticism on the infamous 2000 Mtn Jam

I gave the infamous version a listen to this past weekend. Man, Derek and Jimmy went far out!
Don't get me wrong, I really dug it. But I can totally see how Gregg would be like, WTF? It was some of the most experimental stuff the Bros might have ever played. I can see in my mind's eye how Derek, Jimmy and Oteil are loving it and all smiles, and Gregg is on the keyboard giving them a death stare.
I was bitter and missed that summer tour purposefully because of Dickey's absence. But I missed out for sure. Some of the High Falls jams from 2000 were awesome.

That is a weird tour, I caught them one night and it was not a very good show to my ears. Granted, I was missing Dickey - the melodies were there but it seemed like Derek and Jimmy were rushing through everything. "Jessica" was fast, but it wasn't very fun. I dig Jimmy's playing, but I never thought he fit in with the Allmans well - he isn't very melodic, he's a jazzy space cadet. ARU is way more his bag.
But I do kind of dig that "Mountain Jam". It had to be a trip for everyone at the time. Derek was maybe 20 and was eager to stretch and experiment, and he had the perfect foil for that in Jimmy. Just resurrecting "Mountain Jam" to begin with must have been a total treat.

I love that tour
Can someone tell me the name of the thread that contained this link? Can't find it
Thanks!

I have the Toronto show from that tour and have to say, this lineup was really good. Much better then I would have guessed. Really tight song executions. Especially liked Done Somebody Wrong and the High Falls is one of my all time favorite versions.

the link to Mtn Jam. Thx PCB!

That Toronto show is a different beast with the return of Warren and Woody - one of the most emotional moments at an ABB show for me. Off the charts with Derek, Jimmy and Warren.
The next night was the last time that I ever saw/talked to Woody. Sad.

The Charlotte show with Jimmy was sublime and the Raleigh show the next day is one of my top 10 ABB live recordings official or otherwise. Just incredible IMO.

The best Stand Back I ever saw was on that tour; 6/20/00 in Hershey, PA. Great great show; caught em again in Tinley Park, IL, sadly the day Woody died 🙁 Great line up though. What a guitar tandem, holy smokes

I saw that tour at Konocti Harbor Resort at Clear Lake, a venue which is now closed. I can't remember a lot of details...........but I CLEARLY remember that it was smoking hot and Derek and Jimmy were on FIRE together. Also Gregg singing Loan Me A Dime and killing it..........

What show is this from?

Never mind I found it...now who has a copy. I would like to get it.
What surprise's me is Gregg even knew who Phish were!

listening now-half way through...
a few observations:
1.The drummers don't seem too unhappy-they seem into it.
2.This was pure fun.The music wasn't too bad either 😉
3.Despite # 1 & 2,i can see Gregg's point-it's out there and he sees this nodifferntly than some his expressed opinions about the...
...5.Grateful Dead! In the thread about the Dead/Allmans some of those who are not fans of the Dead-i'm curious what they think of this? 😉 Space....drums...SPACE(Y)

I wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread. First, I saw this band 3, or 4, times the summer of 2000. I believe they opened with Mt Jam most dates, or played it ever night that particular year. I LOVED it! Jimmy and Derek may be my favorite, after Duane and Dickey, guitar pairing ever...
I was sad when I heard Jimmy was leaving and relieved once I heard Warren was coming back.
The summer of 2000 shows were great, imo. Second, Gregg told this same story a long time ago for some radio show interview. He laughed about it .... He said, "yea, my brother and I use to argue about this all the time".

Interesting topic, and I just listened to it for the first time. I have to say that I loved every bit of it. I like new, creative, fresh, innovative styles, and this seems to be a special moment between 2 young up and coming guitar superstars. I think it worked very well. But I understand Gregg's side since it might present a risk to the business. If the original core fans suspected the 2000 version of the ABB is going to try to sound more like Phish moving forward, then they could lose a segment of them. I can't fault him for wanting to protect the brand/product.
