....Without David Lee Roth.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, David Lee Roth‘s incredible Eat ‘Em and Smile band is ready to get back together and play out live.

But there are a couple of important caveats. Guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette are reuniting for one night only — a special free show, Nov. 25 at Lucky Strike Live Hollywood/Highland in Los Angeles — and instead of backing up Roth, they’ll be playing with Steel Panther vocalist Ralph Saenz. Still, even if it won’t be quite the same as seeing the band play with Diamond Dave, the event promises to assemble an unfair amount of talent on a single stage.

The show comes courtesy of Ultimate Jam Night, a weekly show co-founded by former Quiet Riot bassist Chuck Wright whose house band features veterans of Mr. Big and the Edgar Winter Group. Billed as a 30th anniversary tribute to Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette’s work on Eat ‘Em and Smile, the concert promises to “re-create” performances from the album and tour.

As Roth fans are sadly aware, the Eat ‘Em and Smile band started its slow dissolution almost as quickly as it came together — something that Vai suggested he saw coming during a 2012 interview with Examiner.com. “Dave got the best musicians he could, who he thought was the best. And I thought it was a hell of a band,” he recalled. “It was one of my favorite times in my whole musical career, because we were rock stars, you know? And touring with somebody like Dave, you can’t even imagine what it was like. It was just glorious, man. And I knew it was fleeting, and I knew it was something that I wasn’t going to be doing my whole life, because my brand of music in my own head is very different.”

For those fortunate enough to be in town for the show, Ultimate Jam Night recommends arriving at the venue “really early.” For more information, visit the official event site.

The Brothers should let Dave go and make an appearance. It's not competition; it's about honoring a legacy. If EVH can play Humans Being during the breakdown in Unchained with DLR fronting the band, then he can let DLR go make a one-off appearance with his band from 30 years ago without getting his boxers in a wad about it.

I said an appearance. 1 song. He probably only remembers the words to Yankee Rose anyway. That was the only solo song he was doing the last several years touring solo as a VH tribute band.

I'm not sure it's Ed and Alex Van Halen's fault that Dave isn't appearing as part of this one-off reunion. Especially given the fact that the latest Van Halen tour was most likely a one off contractual agreement that ended the moment the tour ended.

If Dave wanted to be there he could be. Despite any past of future projects related to Ed and Alex Van Halen..

Apparently Dave was there as a surprise, but the show never happened as fire marshalls shut it down before the show happened.

Should have done what we used to @ Rockers in Houston.

Free drinks all night for the fire marshals and police.

We were fire rated for 850 and put 1500 people in on Halloween night for Cheap Trick.

I went through one entire bottle of Chivas and Jack Daniels for the various "officials".

All we had to do was keep the stairways clear.

Funny story Ron! Grin Would have loved to have seen this show as I saw the original band back in whenever. I love Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan. They are two of the best. Cool

Even better, we ran the stage lights that they brought in by accessing the electric from the Post Office in the middle of the strip center we were in.

It is a shame VH didn't have the foresight to take Ralph Saenz(Michael Starr) out with them instead of Roth. They would sound like they did in the early 80s. That guy sings Roth material even better than Roth did in his prime.

not true. right before he reunited with van halen he was also doing "just like paradise", "just a gigolo/i ain't got nobody" and "california girls". that was 2006. in 2004 he was still doing "going crazy" too
