RIP Dan Hicks.

Grim Reaper is working over time in the music world in 2016..........:

Dan Hicks has died at the age of 74 after a two-year battle with cancer.

The founder of Dan Hicks And The Hot Licks was diagnosed with throat and liver cancer in 2014.

His wife Clare says: "My darling darling husband left this earth early this morning. He was true blue, one of a kind, and did it all his own way always.

"To all who loved him, know that he will live forever in the words, songs, and art that he spent his life creating. He worked so hard on each and every detail – they are all pure Dan."

Arkansas-born Hicks started his musical career as the drummer with San Francisco folk rock band the Charlatans in 1965. The band, along with Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, were considered leaders of the 'San Francisco sound.'

In 1967, he formed The Hot Licks, also known as Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks, and gained arguably his biggest successes with the songs I Scare Myself and Canned Music.

His latest release was 2013's Live At Davies. Hicks passed away in California.

Thanks abbdutch fan ,
seems like Dan was more appreciated outside the US.
I read about this 24 hours ago. I would have thought Dan would have had more attention / love on this site (?)
I've had his 3 classic ABC / Blue Thumb label LPs since the 70's. Admittedly he was only a cult / niche artist ( but the best ones usually are ) and never cracked the big time. Especially down here in Australia where only a very few people would have dug out his stuff in specialized record shops. I have a DVD/ CD combo package from a big concert in San Francisco in the early 2000 's which was wholly devoted to him and his career. Just about all the past and present members of his bands + the Hot Licks . He was belatedly feted by the city of San Francisco.

" belatedly feted ".

Well, I guess that's better than better than being fellatedly baited.

How's that for my attempt at a Dan - ism. In the style of one of his dry concert asides. I think he might have approved of that one.
