Cream of the Crop .....

Excellent release, thanks to all involved in getting it together. Possibly my favourite thing to come out of the Allman’s nest in a while - the edginess and excitement of that 2003 band really comes across well. Go get ‘er if y’ain’t already

Glad to see my local Indy show getting some tracks on there. I was in attendance for that, good show.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Curious if anyone has an opinion of Layla on this collection?
I normally really dislike Layla played live but the 2nd part, the coda, is really beautiful slide playing. A bit too fast for my taste but I really enjoyed it.

It’s good, although i’d say that Trucks sounds not as confident as he usually does on there, but good non the less. Haynes has the perfect voice for it.

The Mountain Jam on there ranks up there with the best they ever played... Derek's first solo after the melody in particular is just brutal and beautiful all at the same time. Everyone is firing on all cylinders, Oteil is off the hook, Warren's rhythm playing and Gregg's hammond all set it up perfectly, and the drummers are playing like they're in their 20s. I still get out of breath listening to that solo and have had it on my "regular" listens for almost 15 years now... crazy...
I recall on the old Moogis site they used to have video footage of that 8/9/2003 show up in the "archive" section. From memory it cut out halfway through the MJ, but it did catch Derek's solo. Now that Butch is no longer with us, I suppose all that film is now lost to the sands of time (aka sitting uselessly on someone's hard disk somewhere), but man what I wouldn't give to watch that again. Derek is otherworldy...

I would echo the previous post. The Mtn Jam from 8/9/03 might just be the highlight of the 2001-2014 run. I remember prior to playing Mtn Jam the band seemed to be having a disagreement on stage. Perhaps that disagreement fueled what would transpire over the next 40 minutes. After a huge buildup, Derek takes his foot off the gas temporarily but quickly doubles down, building on what sounds like Not Fade Away from Warren. This rest of the song is filled with numerous teases as well as a full blown Afro Blue after the drum solo. I frequently go back to this show which contains several other must hear moments. The sound quality is impeccable. Oteil is really clear in the mix.

Would be nice if this came out in vinyl too, but that would be one big box set.

Mountain Jam 8/9/2003

Thanks for sharing that. The first few notes of Mt Jam at an ABB show always put me in a happy space.
Sit back, relax and let the music come your way.

My sweet wife surprised me with this for Father's day. Love mix cd's for driving in my truck and those first 6 Instant lives were the best sounding of all the years crops to my ears. Was at the charlotte show that summer( and every other summer from mid 90's on) and agree "that Mountain Jam" was one of the best I've witnessed.. The sit-ins with Karl Denson & Mr. Marsalis are awesome too! Going to enjoy revisiting 2003 over the next few weeks as I run around in the old chevy pickup! EAPFP

John I remember standing in line for cd's after the show for the first time that night, excited, talking about how the two hour drive home that night wouldn't be a fight to stay awake like it usually was. man what an early morning ride back thru the South Carolina countryside home that night. awesome to relive what we had just seen & heard in studio quality sound. Never left another ABB show where IL's were offered ( they weren't @ the Beacon due to costs/union rules etc for years) without a copy in hand. Also quickly setup an agreement with trading buddies all over the US to pick up an extra copy of shows they attended and gladly reciprocated.

great stuff - so glad I got this.

Denson sat in for Desdemona in Charlotte the night before (and The Same Thing in Atlanta the night before that).

Lately I've been diggin' on this Cream Of The Crop:

Love the new release . Sound is much better than any Instant Live any of us ever purchased . Take a long drive or a long flight and crank up the volume . Easy to forget how strong the 2003-2004 years were for The Brothers .

Loving it. Have the Liz Reed blaring as I write. Terrific!
