Cover songs....

by bands/musicians that are not household names. At least not to me! A lot of good stuff out there and some talented folks!
This first one below is from Band Geeks. The guy playing bass is Ritchie Castillano, keyboard and guitar player from BOC. Maybe an exception here!
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I attended high school (for 2.5 years) with two of the guys from Foxes and Fossils. I had heard that they had achieved a following with this band (featuring ... at least one of their daughters?). I'd never actually head this format. Thanks for posting!

What music is all about - each one put a smile on my face, thanks jszfunk!

The band doing the Trower was tight, and the guitarist has chops, but not Robin Trower chops. The last band I was in covered a lot of RT tunes and I thought we nailed the stuff really well, but I put a lot of hours in learning Robin’s style and wanted to do his songs justice. Here are some clips, obviously not pro shot.

A friend of mine whose son plays bass in a band called Southern Avenue turned me onto Foxes & Fossils a few years back. I think F & F are a talented bunch with great vocals & harmonies.

When a cover song becomes the famous version. And this one was more of a cover of the cover. More like Taj Mahal (Jessie Ed Davis) than Willie McTell.
And Jimi's version so captured this Bob Dylan song when Bob was asked about Jimi's big hit with it Bob said " Oh that. That is Jimi's song. All I did was write it".
And Creme is far more noted for this song than Robert Johnson.

@robertdee Also Cream doing "I'm So Glad" (Skip James), Aretha Franklin -R-E-S-P-E-C-T (Otis Redding); the Allman Brothers - One Way Out (Elmore James) and Done Somebody Wrong -(Eddie Kirkland/ Elmore James). Then there's that Jack Pearson guy who plays a song called Dreams ... 😉
Usually I go with the originator, but sometimes performers appropriate songs in the appropriate direction!

@rusty Thanks Rusty. I was going to include several of your examples but got distracted by a relative on the phone for over two hours.
I actually got to ask Otis Redding about RESPECT by Aretha Franklin. He said she knock it out of the park with her version. And he made a lot more money off her version than he did his own because he wrote it.
I knew he wrote it and that was why I asked him.
This was at a show I think was 1967. Well Aretha's version was on the radio. I didn't know anything about the Allman Brothers then. Sam and Dave and Joe Tex were also on the show and I watched all of them but have no idea if Jaimoe was a drummer at some point.
More than likely he probably was.

@rusty I noticed Jimi's version of All Along The Watchtower has been viewed/played on YouTube over 125 MILLION TIMES!!!! Far more than anything by Bob Dylan or the Allman Brothers. The ABB have some with over 2,3 and 4 million times viewed including Blue Sky, Melissa and Ramblin' Man
There are a lot of old movies with million views on YouTube. I watched one the other night. Death Rides A Horse. A 1967 western starting John Phillip Law, Lee Van Cleef, Anthony Dawson that has over 10 million views!!! Probably more people than when it was released to theatres over 50 years ago.

@robertdee You met and talked to Otis Redding? ... AND saw Joe Tex and Sam and Dave? Man! If there was a great story contest on this site- you just won the Gold Medal! I envy you for this experience!

@rusty Yes I did. Meet Otis Redding. And asked him about RESPECT by Aretha Franklin. I guess it was in 1968 instead of 1967. It was during the time Aretha's version was on the radio all the time.
More recently Jaimoe revealed the people in their touring bands didn't make much money. Most of it went to Otis or Sam and Dave or Percy Sledge etc.
Jaimoe said he worked for very low pay with those guys. And he didn't get a decent salary until he got with Duane Allman and actually Duane gave every member an equal cut of the band's take after expenses. Said Gregg and Dickey made more because of song writing.
And it was the same Duane got.
Howard Duane Allman was a fair man who thought he wasn't any better than the players he put in the band.
Butch didn't like Duane policy that the member who brought a song in the band used got the entire writing credit regardless of what contributions others made as they were developing it for the band.
And Butch pointed out the bass intro and base line is ALL Berry Oakley and the time signature is all his for Whipping Post but Gregg got the royality.
And Butch was even more irritated Dickey got all of Elizabeth Reed. I actually asked him on his blog why didn't he go to Duane and he wrote back that he did! And Duane said it's Dickey's song. Whoever brings it in it's theirs regardless what we end up doing to it.
I think he said Whipping Post was kinda a slow ballad when Gregg played it for them.
