Cody Kilby isn't as well known as Tony Rice or Bryan Sutton, but he's really strong. Fast, clean, melodic -- what more do you need? He played with Ricky Skaggs for years, has played with the Travelin’ McCourys (Ronnie McCoury and Rob McCoury are sons of Del McCoury. Del still tours; he played mandolin with Bill Monroe in the 1960s.

ABB connection: Vassar Clements was one of the top bluegrass fiddle players, and he played on Dickey “Richard” Betts’s album Highway Call.

He has a couple of solo CDs, there’s a lot on YouTube, and his discography is at http://www.cduniverse.com/default.asp

Ronnie McCoury: Mandolin, vocals
Rob McCoury: Banjo
Alan Bartram: Bass, vocals
Jason Carter: Fiddle, vocals
Cody Kilby: Guitar
Jeff Austin, guest: Mandolin, vocals

Cody has left Ricky Skaggs and is playing with the Traveling McCourys full time now....and yes...a monster on the six-string....and the squareneck Dobro, actually. Speaking of which...the great squareneck Dobro player Rob Ickes has left the uber award-winning Blue Highway and replaced by a young gunslinger in Gaven Largent.

Thanks for the update. I didn't know that Cody plays Dobro as well -- I'll have to see what I can find out.

The real surprise is that Rob left Blue Highway after 20 or so years. This is the first real personnel change since they formed, except for the time a member (can't remember who just now) left for a year or two on paternity leave. I hope that Gaven can fill the gap.

BTW, have you heard Three Bells by Mike Auldridge, Jerry Douglas, and Rob? I pre-ordered it, and still find that when I play it once I wind up playing it a couple more times. No other musicians, just those three. Good stuff.

Sad but true, but at least the parting was on good terms: http://www.thebluegrasssituation.com/read/rob-ickes-leaving-blue-highway
and http://bluehighwayband.com/news .

My wife and I saw them a couple of years ago for our anniversary. She's not as big a bluegrass fan as I am (it's pretty much all I listen to now, apart from Duane and Danny Gatton) but she was floored as I was.

As is almost always the case with bluegrass (gigs and studio recordings) the music is family friendly. At Blue Highway we saw young kids and people who were at least in their 70s, if not older.

Country rocks, but bluegrass rules!
