I listen to a lot of podcasts, mostly about music and this topic comes around every so often. Some artist comment they do it because they have that creative energy to make something new, others dont want to put the effort into it very often because some fans really dont pay attention and just want the old stuff/hits. Personally,I am all in favor of new material. I think we most are, the hard core's. But the casual "I am here for the hits" probably could care less. Some new music I have heard from classic artist I wonder if the well has run dry and really has done nothing for me.

I will use a few examples I felt are worthy. Probably some more I am not thinking of.

Mellencamp. I still live and grew up here in Indiana and was a teenager during his heydays in the 80's. His music was , I felt was literally shoved down your throat by FM radio. Beaten into the ground. He was not my style then , so they did not help either. I would say over the last 10-12 years I have became more of a fan of his later day stuff. It's really solid material.

Deep Purple. I could go on about them in so many ways. Maybe because I am bias, but what they have done over the last 9 years with Bob Ezrin has been very impressive. LIke I said, I could blather about them for days. Wont bore ya.
Van Halen. I know Ed is gone, and its been 10yrs since the last release, but ADKOT stands very well with the classic 6. And I dont care if most of it's from the past laying around, Does not matter.

As much as I love AC/DC they kinda teeter in the middle for me. I do appreciate them putting out material and all, but some of it is hit or miss. Every time they release something, I am hoping for this gargantuan rocker, but recently it never has meant my expectations. With Mal gone, it might never. I have read things on line and hear people comment on how great Power Up is ,they're latest. I just dont hear it. I might revisit a 2-3 songs for a playlist , but that is it. Just nothing to memorable for me beyond those. Mostly mid tempo rockers. I know some of the public stigma behind them is they have been putting out the same album for decades. I get that to a point, maybe. But I have always liked what they have brought to the table. I am not expecting BIB 2 at all, but I feel there is something that can be tapped. The right producer might be the answer.

Nothing against Brian Johnson, but in away I was hoping to hear an Axl fronted AC/DC release.

Santana. Supernatural was his big come back into the spotlight. Maybe he just hit it at the right time by combining who was hot at the time to collaborate with to put that release up there in he charts. It is good , fantastic guitarist for sure, but all of it is not my cup of tea. Since then, pretty spotty as far as stuff I would go back to listen to.

Not really a big fan of Tesla or Def Leppard , but will take a listen to hear whats new from them. They fall into a genre I like so I give them a go. Nothing. With some of these bands I wonder if they need to bring in some outside writers to help. Not trying to pick on those two, they just come to mind. Maybe If I was more of a die hard fan I might get it. Like I said, possibly the well has run dry.

ZZTop and Billy Gibbons is another. Just not hearing it from them. Nothing to hit replay these days.

The Allmans...of course. Had the potential and personnel for sure to make more and new music, but only got four studio releases from 1990-2014, but tons of live stuff.

I try and listen to new "rock" style music. But very little sticks with me. I do like Rival Sons quite a bit. I think I might be becoming a Blackberry Smoke fan. Still have to listen to more of the catalog first.

My hope is that the Black Crowes will put out some new material in the near future. Really bring some attention to that genre again. They seem to be more back into "Rock" mode ,which is good. I think that's when they are at they're best. I like to see Chris up there as a frontman. The two of them together can write quality music, they have proven that. Just waiting for it to happen.

Not a rabid fan of his, but I do enjoy his music for the most part. His latest I ran through once, maybe need to give it another listen to make a final call.  Rolling Stone gave it 3.5 out of 5.  I think if Neil  put a microphone near his rear and did some well executed farts, they would rave about it.

Bob Dylan. I dont think that guy has ever leveled out. Just keeps writing great stuff. One of the best songwriters of the rock music scene.

I acknowledge his talent but I was never a big Dylan fan. Much prefer the songwriting of Young or Springsteen as two artists that still bring the goods.

I am also and a big fan of AC/DC, even if every album is the same type of rock, but think they lost their magic when Malcom passed as from what I have read he was the real songwriter of that band.

As far as Axl fronting AC/DC or writing new music with them, this guy has never done anything of note since Use Your Illusions as IMHO Chinese Democracy was mediocre at best.

JMO but I doubt we will ever see any meaningful music out of Rose again even now that he seems to have reconciled with Slash and Duff. The couple of recent songs GnR released were ChiDem reject and not very interesting to me. Even if they write new music For any new music I think they will really miss Izzy as he really added that bluesy feel to the music that complemented Slash's riffs.

Slash's solo work with Myles is hit or miss but at least he puts out a new rock album every couple of years and there are a handful of good tracks on every album to create a greatest hit set.

And of course I love every album Gov't Mule has released, and think they still bring it, but I am a bit of fan boy and know others here feel the last several albums have not been as good as earlier work.

As far as the Crowes are concerned I would love to hear some new music by the brothers as I really liked Rich's Magpie Salut albums and some of Chris's Brotherhood stuff. I think they could crank out a stellar album if they could get along with each other long enough to write together.

YMMV vary of course.

Robin Trower has a new thing out. The singer is very good. Like his voice.
