Great stuff and thanks for posting. I remember when those two toured together because they came through the Bay area, I believe @ Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland. Not one to be missed, but unfortunately I missed it. I've seen both of them solo multiple times.

I never saw them and this was first listen ever of Carlton.Ford,I've heard but never saw.Together they are sensational.

Rob-you made me realize it's worth checking out their schedules-any album of Carlton's you can recommend?

I'm much more into Robben Ford than I am Larry Carlton. Maybe that's because Robben tours much more than Larry does. I only have one Larry Carlton record, it's called "Friends" and it came out in 1983. It's quite good..............a mellow mood, lots of horns on it. The late, great sax player Michael Brecker is on three tunes. I think you'd really dig it Effie.

I couldn't even tell you how many times I've seen Robben Ford but I've only seen Larry twice. He was very good both times but the last one really sticks out. Must have been 2005 at Yoshi's, he blew away both me and my friend that night.

You can get Larry Carlton and Robben Ford Live In Japan where this video is from (or tour from which this video was taken.) IMO Robben's solo studio stuff leaves a lot to be desired compared to Robben live. Talk To Your Daughter wasn't bad. For a rocking Larry Carleton guitar throw down I recommend Renegade Gentlemen. Also Robben Ford toured with GAF with Willie Weeks and Steve Potts ... why there wasn't some commercially available product of this incarnation is yet another WTF Greg Allman monument. Robben was off the charts on the show I saw.

I was really pissed that the Gregg tour w/ Robben never came out West. I was salivating to see that. I agree with you about Robben's studio recorded output. I'm missing a lot of his stuff but what I do have is hit or miss. Last summer I saw him live at Bluesapalooza in Mammoth. I mean, he really, really just knocked everyone dead. So, I went to the merchandise booth and bought his latest, Into The Sun. I spun it all the way through maybe three times and I must say I'm completely underwhelmed, don't know when I'll play it again. It's just all over the map, many different styles, some of it way too serious. I just could not get into it. But his previous record, A Day In Nashville, is quite good, an R&B record. It was recorded in one day in Nashville, hence the title. He's become kinda like Neil Young in that you never know what he's going to do next in the studio.

Carlton has been around forever and is one of my 5 favorites. There are 4 albums he played on with the Crusaders that are astounding. Chain Reaction and Those Southern Knights are the ones where Larry plays the greatest role, some of his writing shows up. Crusaders I has an 11 minute So Far Away that is as good as any solo I've ever heard. Scratch was recorded live, I think at the Roxy and he shows off on that one.

As a solo artist, the biggest problem I've seen is that his writing inconsistent. As part of a band where he throws in 2 or 3 original songs, he shines. There are some songs that I would buy from iTunes-Point It Up from Room 335 shows the bankruptcy of every shredder out there.
