Carlos Santana Forming Group With Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and Wayne Shorter

COUNT ME IN!!!
"It's kind of like playing with, sharing music with, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking" -- Carlos Santana.

I apologize, there was already a thread here titled Supernova.Wanee.YES.
But that's OK, this subject deserves two threads!

Wasn't sure what the other thread contained, but this one sure caught my eye!
I would sacrifice large sums to see that band.
Wonder who'll play bass? Benny? Alphonso? Dave Holland?

Didn't he say something about doing a project with the original Santana band also? Still I'd like to see this band.

You didn't bother reading the article I posted.

"The guitarist also discussed Santana IV, which will feature original Santana members Greg Rolie, Marcus Malone and Michael Carabello along with drummer Michael Shrieve, who joined the band in 1969. Neal Schon will also be on hand, first joining on guitar in 1971. An album has been recorded and Santana confirmed the group will be touring next year"

I read it earlier in the week. No time to go back as I didn't want to get caught by the boss.

When I caught the news over at jambands, I think I squeaked. Lordy, I hope this makes it to the states.

This will be a must see show for me.
can't wait

the isley graham project also sounds cool.

As interesting as this sounds, it's always been very hard for me to listen to jazz fusion music. I like jazz the old school stuff, but the fusion is just WAY beyond me.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

For me fusion has always translated better live.
I bet this will be more a hybrid than straight up fusion. I think Shorter will bring in more melody.

Who knew Carlos was bald ?

labels are sometimes deceiving. I don't know what fusion is anymore
I saw Wayne a few years ago with Danillo Perez, John Pattitucci, and Brian Blade.
It was a great show - some of it was fairly abstract.
Fusion? Contemporary? Free?
I don't know what to call it.
I would imagine this band might sound a bit like the Love Devotion Surrender album

Sounds great with this new band and the original band reunion. Anything to get Carlos away from pop music.

McLaughlin sat in on a Montreux show in 2011 which was subsequently released on DVD. Cindy Blackman was also on hand (along with Dennis Chambers). Four of the five tunes on Love, Devotion, and Surrender were also played, so I would say you are on the money when saying it should sound like that era. I always that album and tour had more of a Santana influence than McLaughlin. There were 4-5 Santana members on the album, much of it percussion. I am pretty stoked.
By the way, the bald Santana picture freaked me out a bit. I don't think I've seen him without a hat in years.

This will be the best band on Earth or close to it. All the players involved still have their mojo fully intact and only good things can come from this.
They need to bring this to the New Orleans Jazz Fest, and I need to be there when they do!

Who knew Carlos was bald ?
I just assumed that he was since you never see him without the hat. Lots of rockers use hats and bandannas to cover up the bald head.

That is quite the "skullet" Carlos is rockin, and combined with the Geri-curl wet look....yowsa!

Skullet - ha, ha, new word for me, good one.

I like the idea of the original Santana band back together. I am not so sure about the new thing he putting together. I have a live CD of LDS and it was just two guys pitting amps on 11 and going at it for 2 hours. Also, I don't see John M taking a back seat to Carlos.
One more thing everyone knew Calos was bald. That is why he wore the hat all the time.

"I don't see John M taking a back seat to Carlos."
Why on Earth should he?
I love Carlos as much as anybody, but John McLaughlin is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He would be wasted as a "rhythm guitarist" playing backup for Santana.
The whole point of a "supergroup" like this is that the members are all equals and nobody takes a backseat to anybody.

Anyone wanting a sampling of this can pick up the Santana & McLaughlin Live At Montreux 2011 DVD.
It is also coming out on CD in a week or so as well.
