Chuck Leavell, John Bell, Marcus King, Jaimoe & More Perform At Capricorn Revival Concert
Dec 5, 201912:50 pm PSTScott Bernstein

Pianist Chuck Leavell, Widespread Panic frontman John Bell, guitarist Marcus King and The Allman Brothers Band drummer Jaimoe were among the musicians will performed at the Capricorn Revival commemorative concert at the Macon City Auditorium in Macon, Georgia on Tuesday night. The marathon show came in celebration of the grand re-opening of the famed Capricorn Sound Studios facility.

The history of Capricorn Records and Southern Rock was honored throughout the evening. Leavell served as musical director and was joined in the house band by Randall Bramblett, Nick Johnson, Davis Causey, Tom Ryan, Charlie Heyward, Jerry Hanson, Bill Stewart, Kevin Hyde, Wayne Postell and Marcus Henderson. Guests came on and off-stage to augment the house band at various points of the night.

Bill Underwood of Mercer University spoke about the Mercer Music At Capricorn program to begin the event. Radio personality Mara Davis then introduced a video featuring Billy Bob Thornton before Taj Mahal joined the house band for “Respect.” Taj stuck around for a take on “Statesboro Blues” that also featured King, Jaimoe and Drew Smithers. Next up were performances of The Marshall Tucker Band classics “Heard It In A Love Song” and “Can’t You See.” Then, Jonathan Edwards played a solo version of “Sunshine” and was backed by the band on “Shanty.”

The concert rolled on with a cover of Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around & Fell In Love” featuring Lamar Williams Jr. and Bonnie Bishop. Another high point came a few songs later when the house band was joined by Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, Lamar Williams Jr. and Tommy Talton for The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams.”

Wet Willie was represented by Jimmy Hall, Jack Hall, Donna Hall and Rick Hirsch for “Rendezvous With The Blues” and “Keep On Smilin’.” After performances of “Brand New Man” and “Please Be With Me,” John Bell emerged for a cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and Panic’s own “Weight Of The World.” Duane Betts then represented his father, Dickey Betts, on The Allman Brothers Band’s “Pony Boy” along with fellow ABB kin Lamar Williams Jr. and Berry Oakley Jr. Next up was a duet between Talton and Betts on Duane Allman’s instrumental “Little Martha.” The evening came to a close with Allman Brothers Band classics “Midnight Rider,” “Jessica” and “Whipping Post” as well as a grand finale of the fitting “Revival” featuring most of the guests on hand.

Set: Respect (w/ Taj Mahal), Statesboro Blues (w/ Taj Mahal, Marcus King, Jaimoe & Drew Smithers), Heard It In A Love Song (w/ Chris Hicks, Marcus King, Drew Smithers & Paul Hornsby), Can’t You See (w/ Marcus King, Drew Smithers & Paul Hornsby), Sunshine (Jonathan Edwards solo), Shanty (w/ Jonathan Edwards), Fooled Around & Fell In Love (w/ Lamar Williams Jr. & Bonnie Bishop), Only You Know & I Know (w/ Bonnie Bramlett, Charles Davis, Tommy Talton & Paul Hornsby), Please Call Home (w/ Taj Mahal, Bonnie Bramlett & Tommy Talton), Dreams (w/ Charlie Starr, Lamar Williams Jr. & Tommy Talton), Rendezvous With The Blues (w/ Jimmy Hall, Jack Hall, Donna Hall, And Rick Hirsch), Keep On Smilin’ (w/ Jimmy Hall, Jack Hall, Donna Hall, And Rick Hirsch), Brand New Man (w/ Charlie Starr & Bonnie Bishop), Please Be With Me (w/ Charlie Starr, Tommy Talton, Bonnie Bramlett & Rumer), I Walk On Guilded Splinters (w/ John Bell), Weight Of The World (w/ John Bell), Pony Boy (w/ Duane Betts, Brent Cobb, Berry Oakley Jr. & Jaimoe), Little Martha (Tommy Talton & Duane Betts Duet), King Grand, Midnight Rider (w/ Tommy Talton & Charlie Starr), Jessica (w/ Duane Betts, Jaimoe & Berry Oakley Jr.)

Wife and I went...couldn’t believe no one here was talking about it. It was a magical night...sold out. The vibe in Macon can’t be beat. Chuck Leavell organizing everything...just a legend. It was amazing and so heartfelt....they just rolled one Capricorn legend after another...so many amazing tunes. Hearing Tommy Talton and I believe Duane Betts do Please be with Me is something I’ll never forget. My wife and I first dance song after our wedding...and to hear it performed live (and oh so beautifully) after all the years while being pregnant with our first child may never be topped. I nearly cried. I could go on and on...it was magical.

I posted a link to it on the 3rd, the day of the show. I figured there'd be at least one person here on the forum that would have tickets to it.
Impressive lineup for the show. Looked like it was gonna be a blast!
