Gregg Allman was a big Clarence Carter fan so I always thought it was odd that Carter's "That Old Time Feeling" got re-titled as "Sweet Feeling" on Playin' Up A Storm. Then I stumbled upon Candi Staton's cover (who was married to Dr CC in the 1970s) which was re-titled "Sweet Feeling" on her 1969 debut album. Maybe shortening it made it less clunky.

Gregg performed the song pretty regularly with his solo band up until the end. The next generation is continuing to play it too...

Thank you Porkchop. I never knew that. Enjoyed the links. I hadn't heard anything off Playing Up A Storm in a long time. I bought it 1977 I think was the year so have it on vinyl.

A quick sidebar. Have you heard of guitarist Sue Foley? I had not. But I was reading an interview with Susan Tedeshi last night on her "signature" Tele out now and Susan said female guitar players often are overlooked. Susan said Sue Foley is a kick ass guitar player I hold as top notch now for years. Foley should have a signature model too and git it 20 years ago!!

I've never heard of Sue Foley. Have you?

I found this quick clip of Sue Foley and man see is playing the blues with feeling. Watch her face.

Also I forgot to mention I saw Gregg solo in 1983 and the audience kept calling for Slip Away and eventually Gregg said to us something like. " I pulled that from the set list. I'm a big Clarence Carter fan and we weren't doing that song right. After this tour we are going to worked it up again in rehearsals".

So he didn't play Slip Away that night.

@robertdee

Ha that's funny about "Slip Away", it was back in the rotation a few years later and was on one of his cheesy Epic solo albums.

Foley sounds good. I'm not a big new blues guitar fan - what hasn't been done already? - but she seems like a solid player.

@porkchopbob Let's see Danny and Frankie Toler were in Gregg's band in 1983 and I can't remember who was on bass. Maybe Bruce W?

Gregg had a dry period from 1982 to 1987. He couldn't get a record deal. Even his 1987 Epic deal came about when an A&R man saw Gregg's demo in the trash can where one of the suites tossed it after listening to 15 seconds of it and the A&R guy liked Im No Angel and persuaded the label to sign Gregg.

Gregg and Dickey's band were back playing in beer joints and small clubs. I think Dickey moved to Nashville to try the country outlaw scene but he pretty much gave up. Couldn't get a deal either. Such a trendy business for many artists.

Yeah Susan Tedeshi said she has been a big fan of Sue Foley for 20 years. And thinks more women players should get better recognition. Nothing wrong with that to me.

Your right about the blues. If you can up with something new and different so you don't sound like the three Kings, Clapton, Muddy and the early Allman Brothers and they were playing much like the three Kings, Elmore James etc you wouldn't be playing the blues!!:) Not much left on the canvas to invent.

Sue Foley is a talented singer and player.  I've seen her live a couple of times; once was acoustic in a duo and the other was electric with a band.  Both were enjoyable.  BB King's Bluesville channel on SiriusXM plays her occasionally.

Also, thanks for the info on That Old Time Feeling/Sweet Feeling.  I wasn't aware of the background history.  I enjoy this site for a lot of reasons, but learning something new (to me) is one of my favorite reasons!
