Butch Trucks - Subterranean Homesick Blues

strange, don't know what to make of this.

That is Butch, not very long at all, before he died, doing his version of Robert Plant or Mick Jagger.
Actually Butch sang a Bob Dylan song rather well in that band but he played the drums while singing.
I always laugh when I think about some of the things Butch use say. Like the record company and the people in New York thought we didn't have a chance. The only way to have any chance at all would be to get Gregg out from behind that organ, stick a salami ( sometimes a cucumber) down the front of his pants and have him jump around like Mick Jagger.

I didn't know what to expect when I saw the link, all these years never knew Butch sang,at best maybe background vocals on Revival or something similar. This version is exactly 2 weeks prior to his death, maybe doing this was on his bucket list, just saying.

playallnight. I think Butch received notice from the IRS that afternoon they were coming after more money concerning taxes owed in his personal business ventures. I believe he had just sold real estate well in excess of a million dollars to get the tax man off his back and then they are demanding more. It upset Butch that his death was just a quick reaction to such devastating financial news. I don't think he had been thinking about doing it for sometime like Budd Dwyer did in 1987 in front on TV news cameras the day before he was to be sentenced as Pennsylvania State Treasurer convicted of taking a 300 thousand dollar bride. Dwyer's suicide was shown on CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and TV stations nationwide. I couldn't bare to watch it until just a few years ago I got up the nerve.
Butch, Gregg, Duane, Dickey, Jaimoe and Berry did the chant on Black Hearted Woman on the first album with Berry laughing at the conclusion and the harmony vocals on Revival on Idlewild South. On Enlighten Rogues Butch, Gregg and Dickey sing backing vocals on Just Ain't Easy. On Shades of Two Worlds Butch, Dickey, Warren and Jaimoe sing backing on Come On Into My Kitchen. Butch, Dickey, Warren, Jaimoe and Allen Woody sing back up on Revival on First Set and Gregg replaces Dickey on Where It All Begins on Second Set and Butch, Gregg, Warren, Allen and Jainoe sing backup on Everybody's Got A Mountain To Climb on Where It All Begins. In Pony Boy on Brothers and Sisters after Dickey and Butch slap out that hambone coda you can hear Butch laughing at the end when Dickey changed it up on Butch.
That is some deep cut info but I figured it out over the years and it was Butch who told it when answering questions on this site. Dickey himself told me it was everybody in the band singing backup on Revival and Black Hearted Woman when I got to ask him at a show Dickey was doing at a club in North Carolina in 1986. Butch on this site added it was Berry Oakley laughing at the end of the chant on Black Hearted Woman and Butch came out with Butch laughing on Pony Boy.
I use to think all of the banter at the end of Mountain Jam was Duane. But Butch said it is Berry Oakley talking first " Hope you all have a good weekend" etc then Duane Allman on a different mic says " BERRY OAKLEY, DICKEY BETTS, BUTCH TRUCKS, JAI JOHNNY JOHNSON, GREGG ALLMAN AND I'M DUANE ALLMAN. GOOD NIGHT"

He had to sell his beachfront home in West Palm Beach at a 2 million dollar loss...

Blackey, I was a photographer for the Harrisburg Patriot News, and unfortunately I witnessed that suicide, me and my fellow photogs didn't sleep for weeks. It was a very snowy day late Jan. and kids were home from school and all the local TV station played it over and over, a terrible decision. Budd was a good man who I believe was framed, he committed suicide to die in office so his wife would get his pension. Soon after this the Pa.Treasury hired me to run their photo dept. ( nothing challenging, lot of forensic stuff, unclaimed property for E-bay,etc., and anything the state treasurer wanted), and that's where I retired from. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
