Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band:PourHouse-Charleston, SC 2/8/16

Butch and Co. played the awesome and intimate PourHouse last night here in Charleston. Smaller crowd on a rainy Monday night after the Superbowl but it did not deter Butchie and the gang from KILLLING it! Rough setlist: Hot Lanta, Statesboro, Trouble No More, Freeway Jam (killer!), Aint no Sunshine, Jessica, Only you Know & I know (unreal, HIGHLIGHT), Knockin on Heaven's Door, Highway 61 (Butch on vocals!!!), Jeep on 35 (Scofield), Ophelia, Liz Reed E: Whippin' Post
First off...great band. 3 guitars...Vaylor, Damon Fowler and a young, very talented girl. Berry Oakley Jr. totally owning BO's aggressive attack/tone...tears in your eyes listing to he and Butch lock. Butch employed a 2nd drummer during ABB stuff. Bruce Katz may have been MVP...he was possessed all night. Way different approach than when playing with Gregg...he was pretty much getting all Jerry Lee Lewis with it. BIG presence, even better playing...awesome. Damon Fowler would play seated, lap-style slide on his 6-string for the classic Duane parts...he did a great job and this comes from someone who is VERY discerning when it comes to the intricacies of Skydog stuff. Just awesome, spirited music...the band was having fun and it showed. Great non-ABB song selections...Freeway Jam and Jeep on 35 really allowed Vaylor Trucks to showcase his fusion-approach. And who woulda thunk-it...Butch sounded pretty awesome singing Highway 61, lol! The crowd got a kick out of that. Jessica, Liz Reed and WP all evolved/devolved the way lengthy ABB excursions do...reminding that this music is truly timeless, can turn-on-a-dime, and can't be quantified. You find yourself deep in improvisation knowing the The Road Goes on Forever.
The band was really gracious and hung around with fans. Fun talking to everyone, especially BO Jr., who is such a nice guy. Butch even came out and spoke to a few people, including yours-truly. Got my Idlewild, EAP and Seven Turns lp jackets signed. He said he intends to tour more extensively with Les Brers...who may be the most exciting post-ABB outfit. Not that I've had the pleasure, but Jack Pearson is involved; so...yeah.

Nice share! Thanx

thanks for the post show review Andrew. Miss Mary Beth living in Chucktown. Saw some great music @ the Pour House over the years. If you're ever in Charleston for a couple of days, check out this great intimate live music venue that's always got something great lined up. Last two shows there for me were Nikki Blhum and the Gramblers and The New Riders of the Purple Sage.
