Butch talks to RS about 1971 A&R Studios Radio Concert release (and other re-releases)

The new distribution deal enables the releases that are out of print to be produced again. That's a positive. So is the release of the A&R studios show. I'll be a buyer of the official release even thought I have the traded version.
It's not like the ABB haven't released a lot of live material from the early days:
A&R Studios (release date April 1)
Ludlow Garage
6 CD Box set At Fillmore East (which includes the June Fillmore show that was previously a Eat a Peach Bonus)
Atlanta Pop Festival 1970
Fillmore East 1970
American University 12/13/70
Boston Commons
Suny Stoneybrook 9/19/71
Macon City Auditorium 2/11/72
Nassau Coliseum 1973
Brothers & Sisters Box set live material
Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas
The last few years has been huge for ABB type archive releases with the expanded early albums, Filllmore Box, Brothers & Sisters box and Duane box. I'm surprised we would think they are starving us. Regardless of who's putting it out, it's getting to us.
Plus, the later eras of the band are well documented live as well,,,,,particularly the Wood/Warren and Warren/Derek linupes (though I'd love an Archive release of the best of Jack/Dickey 1997-1998 with High Falls, Hideaway, I'm Not Cryin, acoustic Elizabeth Reed etc....maybe a best of the Beacon & Fox of those two years).

And throw in the jazz jam that Butch, Jaimoe, Marc, Jack, Oteil & Kofi did at Mars Music on their off day during the 1998 Fox Run as a bonus track to the Jack era archive release. It was very cool.

It's not like the ABB haven't released a lot of live material from the early days.....
Put that way, it doesn't look so bad.
It's just the constant teasing which people (usually Butch) indulge in. For example:
"We have so many recordings of unreleased shows that absolutely smoke....For some reason, we stopped putting them out."
"There are some nights we did at the Warehouse in New Orleans that I'd give anything to have out. And we have 'em."
They have set up a new label and, rather than release these "absolutely smoking" unreleased recordings, they re-release previously issued recordings!
You can see why people get frustrated.

Absolutely -- awhile back they should have said once & for all, no archive releases for the time being
Gregg said in his book he wanted to save some 1969-71 shows he has, which he's seldom-if-ever listened to, for listening in the evening of his life -- what golden moments they will be for bro. Gregg
agree w/hotlantim too -- more than enough has been released to please us fans -- & throw in the gems such as the Dreams from the 2/28 Brewer Fieldhouse show;
the two killer 1971 shows from the Warehouse, 3/19 and 9/16
the YDLM from 1/17/71 Syria Mosque -- the xcltnt 7/26/70 Stony Brook show (my tape wobbles at the end of the 1st side) -- the decent-sounding Fillmore West shows from late-Jan. 1971 -- & many-other near & dear ones
these are very good sounding-boards we've all loved since well b4 archive releases
my favorite find is the one from recent years w/the hour long Mtn. Jam and a rare, precious find of DWYNM/XTB -- my copy is labeled "Georgia Terrace" -- surfaced 10 yrs ago or so
am not familiar w/that cool sounding jazz jam that accompanied a Jack-era archive release?

Looked at this on Amazon and see that there will be vinyl available. I might spend a few bucks to own this one on vinyl. Have purchased the 2nd set and BWIAB on vinyl since they ceased to be a live performing band (again). Dropping the needle and hearing some original ABb come thru those old advents & CV's with that warm rich sound that only vinyl can give you, will make this one a wanna-buy for me.

Release is 2 weeks away, and still no official announcement. And no word on whether or not this will be remastered or improved in any way?

According to Amazon.com:
Live From A&R Studios: New York, August 26, 1971 was initially a radio broadcast that originally aired on WPLJ. This set features the band steamrolling through a set of songs including "Statesboro Blues, " "Trouble No More, " "One Way Out, " "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Hot 'lanta." The recording was widely bootlegged, but has been remixed from the original multi-track recording. The quality, dynamic performance and ambience encompassed herein all at once make for a quite staggering sonic experience, one that fans of this legendary act in it's original line-up will relish alongside the groups other essential releases
They left out the 7UP-sponsored introduction!
I'm not seeing it listed on itunes or amazon.com for download, but the record label listed is "ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND RECORDING COMPANY" so I'm not surprised there isn't a big marketing push - the cover looks like it took about 2 minutes to design. I will probably upgrade from my bootleg - a quick comparison of the "You Don't Love Me" sample does sound better than my bootleg and the 30 year old remaster from the Dreams box set.

By the one and only Dave Herman... It's not like sucking on some metal bar...
Turns out, Dave had an interesting side project:

Thanks, porkchopbob!

Whoa, I had not heard that. Immediately purging his voice from my music collection.

The only vinyl I see on this is the import that's been around, I don't see a vinyl on the allman brothers band record label unless i'm missing something. you might want to check just to be sure you get what you want.

Yeah, this is the listing for the remastered official release:
The other listings are foreign bootlegs.

Anyone going out to get this today? If so, please share thoughts on sound quality.

I pre-ordered from itunes, listening to it now. This was always one of my favorite shows, I love how intimate it is, like the whole band playing in your living room (and "Soul Serenade" is one of my favorite songs - one of my favorite moments from the Allmans). And Gregg's organ is all over the place in the mix which is really nice. I've had the bootleg for years but the remaster is pretty earth-shattering.
I really recommend picking this up. Stonybrook might have some "oh shit!" moments, but for me, this is second only to the Fillmore East boxed set.

I'm listening to it now and think it sounds swell!

Great -- this has always been a killer-sounding show, even back in the day of bootleg cassettes -- even then the sound quality was immense -- listened to YDLM/SS when I got the Dreams box in 89 (vinyl
) -- close listening revealed a slight sound improvement 'over' the cassette -- does it say if further remastering was done for the current release, beyond what they did in 89 for the box set --
Awesome to see this put out in general circulation

Again from the link I posted above:
Hey Rich, it really does sound better to my ears. Bill Levenson remixed it and you can tell. He has a knack for making those ABB tapes sound a lot better, just like the Fillmore East box set that came out last year. This remix came straight from the 8-track session tapesfrom the radio station. And it is on the new Allman Brothers Band recording label. And wha makes it even more special for me is they used one of the Duane images I have in the booklet and I got my name in there! That alone makes it a must buy!
Hope this helps.

Bought the album on Friday ... it's great ... better than the bootleg I had. I would compare it in quality, sonic and substance, to the June 27, 1971 release that accompanied the Eat A Peach deluxe edition.
Not to kill a sacred cow but from looking at setlists from 1971 it appears that Duane was playing Soul Serenade as part of You Don't Love Me prior to the A&R Studios show. Is this hazy memory on Butch's part? Or incorrect setlists on the site?
