Who played bass and lead guitar on Box of Rain?
I can't answer that but can say I thought that Kingfish was a really cool band. Was lucky enough to see them once here on the East Coast.
Yeah Kingfish was quite excellent. Caught them with Weir in 75. What got me going on Kingfish was I just got hold of the King Biscuit Flower Hour double CD of Kingfish with Bob Weir at Beacon Theater, 1976-04-03. Truly astonishing sound, fantastic recording, clean, nice bass, band is tight - studio quality. Found at decent price 15$ on Discogs, everywhere else, ebay, amazon, its about 30 $ and up.
Ezly best sounding Biscuit Ive heard, and that's high praise as King Biscuit radio tapes were always the best, didn't drop the bass like a lot of broadcasts. If you are a Bob Weir fan, this record is must have!
Great band, started by Dave Torbert of NRPS, who died at 34 in 1982.

dovetail nails the lead guitar mystery! Dave Nelson. And nope no b-bender or pedal steel, those were all natural bends, which was news to me. Still looking for the bass player . . .
Bass on "Box of Rain." The only tune where the bass line doesn't have that "Phil" Resonance and Tone. Brer actually answered the question above. It was the New Riders' bassist at the time, Dave Torbert. Great singer, too.

Thx for the DNB update - ok couple more fun facts re Box of Rain: Garcia on piano, Phil on acoustic guitar. Nobody's doing what they usually do!
Phil needed a song to express himself about his dad's death - Found an interview where Hunter said the lyrics wrote themselves "as fast as the pen could pull". He was at first thinking about the planet, as in "Ball of Rain" but that didn't sound right so he went with "Box of Rain". After that he told the interviewer, "I don't know who put it there."
Dovetail has it right. And that is correct they are all natural bends on a standard Tele no B-Bender or steel on the recording of those lead lines.

Here's David from a couple nights ago at Terrapin Crossroads using a B-Bender Tele with his band DNB. They play Dave Torbert's song Contract. It was DNB's 25th anniversary show. Not bad for someone who is in their mid 70's and who had cancer and broke his shoulder 3 years ago. I *LOVE* the DNB and I put Dave's lead and pedal steel partner, Barry Sless, up there with people like Steve Kimock, Jack Pearson, and Derek Trucks if we are talking living electric rock 'n' roll lead guitarists.
Seen NRPS in recent years and found Nelson an altogether remarkable guitarist.
Now this goes way way back but great jamming. Love the lead guitar. "Hypnotize" by Kingfish. Various incarnations of this band, but this version was loaded.

Dave Torbert was a great singer, excellent bassist, good vibe stage presence. Saw in a comment on deadnet or someplace that Kingfish was the only unsigned group to headline at Winterland other than Santana.
I visited Bay Area in winter of 1975. Saw Kingfish at Winterland and "Terry and the Pirates" opened. I remeber Cippolina playing with them. I recall the other guitarist being Les Dudek. That was a nice little twin bill that night.
This was my main Kingfish song.
I loved the way weir and Torbert switched vocal numbers.
Robby could play that white tele too!
