Black Hearted Woman

Looking back through the setlists I find that BHW was only played once in '69, twice in '70 and then not again until '92. I wonder why the original six didn't play it more often?

I imagine it was the chant. If they did the chant like it was done in the studio in New York they would need mics for all six men. That is Gregg, Duane, Dickey, Butch, Jaimoe and Berry on the chant with Berry laughing at the end.
After 1990 when I saw the band play it they didn't do the chant. Well they did it with guitars.
Revival has all six singing Love is Everywhere on the album but after 1990 it was Gregg, Dickey, Warren and Allen Woody. But I do remember one show at the Beacon they had mics for everyone except Marc. After Warren and Allen left in 1997, Marc sang backup on several songs.

Yeah, I remember reading something about that in one of the books. I would love to find a recording of one of the few times they tried it or, for that matter, any variations on their normal set list.

They did it at Love Valley summer 1970 w/a nice jam at the end, maybe 8-10 min or so -- believe they did the chant on that one -- but yes, rarely played by the original band

The two versions I have of the original band doing the song are not that great. In fact this is the one song I can point to where later versions of the band (Warren & Derek on this one) blew the original lineup away.
Of course there a BUNCH to choose from between 2001 & 2014 VS the two I have from 1969 & 1970.

Here's a version from 1997..Looks like Dickey's amp started acting up on him. He starts shaking his head at the very start,Then guys scrambling around behind him.
