King Crimson!

It would be cool to see how Derek handles prog rock. Crimson is one of the more angular and crunchy prog bands, but they also created a body of work that had some Indian (Gamelan) influence in the 1980s in particular.

Jeff Beck.

I like that idea.

This would be a fantasy team up for an album for me, would buy it quickly.

Not sure if Jimmy Herring was mentioned above, but didn't they actually talk about this in the past ? Some sort of collaboration ?

And of course Warren Haynes, any genre, any format, any time.

Maybe not for a whole record, but would love to hear Derek sit in with Tinariwen, particularly live.

I'll second Isbell. The guy can write great song after great song and the TTB IMO lacks their own songs. The last studio record was an improvement but they still don't grab me outside of their great live show. I don't see the appeal of Doyle Bramhall's writing either but that is just my .02

Isbell's guitarist is great and so is he but when I hear " 24 Frames" I want to hear Derek on that slide part .

Since the ABB hung it up, I really don't go for other jam bands if you even want to call them that. It took some digging but there's some really great song writing people and bands out there. Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Lucero etc..

Dawes blew me away live. Song after great song played perfectly without being stiff. Derek would sound great on some of their tracks also.

I know it's probably an unpopular opinion on this site but I think Dawes new guitar player is better fit than Duane Betts. Duane's doing fine with his band and I really want to hear Jam Town which is Donovan Frankenrieter, G love with Duane sometimes playing leads for them..

Doyle Bramhal or Ben Nichols (if they click) on vocals/backup guitar, and (stanley clarks or galactics)Drummer with Oteil or even Stanley Clark on bass if available...could be interesting to see where it goes-like the old experimentation of John McLaughlin,ABB or RtF in the golden years of music. It be good to get people to challenge Derek musically to keep things interesting-could be fun for him too I think.

or maybe throw in Trey Annastasio instead and see what happens-he'd prob love to play & co-write with Derek..and if daring enough have both drummers playing off each other like ABB. Victor Wooten and Tal are other great upbeat bass players too if the other 2 aren't available(I saw 3 bass players together once before & their show was phenomenal.) Its all about the chemistry.

It'd just be nice to see something very different & experimental again with a great groove once in awhile that shakes things up in music rather than-going back to the same old-same old like Zeppelin,Eagles,r&b and older stuff thats played to death all the time. There's a few new Revolutionary sounds today but not a lot. I always thought Derek had it in him to take music somewhere further after seeing him at 13 (DTB were closest at the time to being somewhat experimental). ABB w Derek were great in mixing it up but(it was Duanes legacy) Theres still time for Derek to take music somewhere else...Can't think of too many musicians capable & respected enough to pulling it off ! And he could have just about anyone sit in with them to experiment even further such as (Santana,Clapton,..) & since it would be a side pjt no pressures on $$,and if it became successful even better ! Way to shake things up in music again!!! Probably would never happen though.

but it'd be great if something like that did again...

Lucero YES

One of my favorite bands today. Derek would open up a whole new avenue for them to pursue. My only complaint with them is how they use (or don't use) Brian Venable. He's a good, not great, guitar player but no where close to Derek. Ben Nichols is one of the best songwriters out there today.

I can't believe someone else wants to hear this! I would wear out an album, but a 20- or 30-minute live jam might be ideal. Like the Sahib Teri/Maki Madni thing dTb used to do but more intense. Just a few weeks ago I found a Vieux Farka Toure album where Derek plays on one track ("Aigna" from The Secret) and it's a low-key version of what that might sound like. And that's a pretty good album on its own: Eric Krasno produced and also plays on one song, and John Scofield and Dave Matthews (not my cup of tea) also show up, and Ivan Neville plays keys throughout.

Dawes is good live, but I think their most recent studio album is terrible. They messed too much with their sound. I think Blake Mills production killed Dawes most recent album as well as the Alabama Shakes most recent album. Way too modern and over produced. Both went too Indy Rock and he is the common ground so I guess I'll blame him.

I like Lucero...and their Jersey counterparts Gaslight Anthem.

To me those are two of the best newer bands out there and they sound like opposite sides of the same coin.

As far as Derek goes, and I don't have much to complain about his current band, but I would love to hear him do something with someone like Leon Bridges or just a wildcard Paul Westerberg. Bridges would be a natural fit, but Westerberg might bring out a garage side of Derek that we haven't seen yet. Something off the wall.
