I absolutely don't get Phish

And yes, this ^ is what I hear

That vid is too hilarious - a friend sent it to me, it had me in tears, almost choked I was at a diner, had to shut it off.

So yeah, never got Phish myself. Didn't grab me enough to try. Gotta be some draw at first, with Phish, it was a pushaway. Just seemed kind of contrived. Changed my mind some recently - very much dug a recent live of the Anastasio Band, 2016 Red Rocks however, solid, very tight, great horns, good god the trombone girl was as hot as her chops.

I half agree with this. Many of my favorite songs entered my heart instantly.

I'll offer two "howevers":

1. Some songs that are instantly pleasing do not have staying power. Sometimes it is not the song's fault; the darned thing just gets overplayed. But sometimes the same catchiness that made it instantly appealing becomes cloying, or does not reward repeated listening.

2. Some of what become my favorite songs do take me a while to get used to. Sometimes the song is just far out or outside of my expectations. It could be that a band keeps changing (King Crimson, Miles Davis, Wilco) so it takes me a while to appreciate the new sound and not merely miss the old sound.

Sometimes the song has odd or dissonant qualities that just take a while to wrap your head around. I liken this to certain flavors, like broccoli rabe or hoppy IPAs; they might just be too bitter or too SOMETHING at first, but once you get the taste, you crave it.

Music, literature, food, movies, human beings - sometimes the strange stuff that takes some getting used to becomes your favorites.

Agree! Agree! Agree! Good stuff can eventually get through, even if strange or just different at first. Love the mention of of the other categories of the arts and people too. To extend it a bit further I'd like to add cultures. Been fortunate enough to visit and even live in other countries. Viva la difference! Wish everyone had the opportunity. Can add so many more colors to your palette.

Absolutely - could start a new thread on what you didn't get at first but ended up into. I am always searching for new sounds.

Forgot the biggest mystery to me - Buffett.

Quite simple. People like to drink and party too much. The man is a genius; parlayed one song into a billion dollar empire.

he has a few big well known tunes
cheeseburger in paradise
it's 5 o' clock somewhere
margaritaville
come monday (imo his best song)

Come Monday is a beautiful tune. But come on, we all you he made his fortune off of one song.

Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

Haven't heard it in years but recall really liking Jimmy Buffett's take of the Kinks' Sunny Afternoon -- good one for him to cover, kinda fits in with the Margaritaville vibe in a way

well he did have a cheeseburger in paradise chain too so that made him tons of money. I have been to a margaritaville and every 10 seconds they play "it's 5 o'clock somewhere' so I'd say it's integral to his big business. he has a clothing line too based off of that song. sandals, bathing suits, etc. imo the man has written some great tunes and to make that much money off of that few hits he is a genius or someone around him is

I rest my case:

I love the music of the Stones but find Mick personally disgusting. Always have. There is something about his persona that just grosses me out. I also can't stand his voice.
