Pretty good little list so far given the elusive subject:
Velvet Underground
Police
Genesis
Ratt
Kraftwerk
Gentle Giant
Nektar
hey what about Atlanta Rhythm Section?

The ratt ep has a cover of “walkin the dog”

Neat topic. I would guess most artists probably covered a bunch of stuff in their formative years. Just going off of the concerts I have been to (no commercial releases) a few stick out.
Steve Miller
Peter Frampton (other than his Humble Pie stuff)
Styx
REO Speedwagon
Although an interesting one to me is Van Halen recording Ice Cream Man. I've always loved that song since I was a kid. Years ago my wife got me a blues boxed set and Ice Cream Man was on it. The original sounds nothing like the VH version but I thought it was the same thing and it is. Original was from 1922. No idea who decided to rearrange that but I think it worked.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

Didn't Steve Miller do a version of Mercury Blues?

Steve Miller probably covered a lot of blues stuff because he likes it but I was just going off the things he plays live so you could very well be correct. Could be on Fly Like An Eagle. Years ago when I saw him he had no opener so he played a LONG time. Some deep cuts, things of that sort. He may have played an old blues song.
That was a fun night. I was at an outdoor shed on the lawn and my buddy set our blanket on fire. 😛

Big Old Jet Airliner was a cover written by Paul Pena, who also wrote Gotta Move
There's and album of his called New Train, recorded in the 70s but not released until 2000. Its worth checking out.

Frampton did "Jumping Jack Flash" on "Frampton Comes Alive"

frampton has done a ton of covers

I thought I posted on this thread, but maybe I messed it up. You all have missed out on my insights!
This is a great topic.
Interesting to consider WHEN a band did covers - was it early in career?
In concert only?
B sides?
Genesis did no covers in their Gabriel years. They DID do a "rock classics" medley at the end of shows live in 1984, which is a shame. I always skip it.
Yes did a Simon and Garfunkel very early on, which they would revisit live.
Sabbath had a cover or 2 on the very first album - Evil Woman, and maybe Warning?
King Crimson covered "Mars, Bringer of War" live on their first tour.
Maiden did a Tull song as a B side.
Purple's early psychedelic albums had loads of covers, but once Gillan joined, they mostly did their own stuff, except maybe Lucille?. But then with Bolin/ Coverdale, they did covers live (Goin Down, Not Fade Away), and with Morse, they will do a cover in the encore, as well as Roadhouse Blues on the last album.

Iron Maiden did a lot of covers for b sides and one of the bands early singles was a cover of women in uniform

Kansas
Cmon Kansas! Surely "Little Yes On the Prairie" can withstand the merciless scrutiny of the matt05.

The first Kansas album they cover a J.J. Cale cover. They covered another song in the 80s but can’t remember the song or album but I know they did

Of course of course the inevitable JJ Cale cover, if you dig deep enough you could probably find a JJ Cale cover in Beethoven's canon . . .
Which brings me to this promising stratagem:
JJ CALE, covered by all yet covered none!

I said live. Not at the concerts I have seen him has he done covers. Maybe he did record a bunch of covers. Would make sense.

I don't have the setlists or what year you saw him but I know in the last 15 years he has played jumpin jack flash, while my guitar gently weeps and black hole sun live a ton. also looking he has done signed, sealed, delivered I'm yours a lot lately

Frampton covers the Easy Beats!

Love that album (well, both of his albums). It's a real shame the drama with that release.
Pena basically lived off the royalties he got from Steve Miller's cover.

Yep - Iron Maiden's cover of Cross Eyed Mary is great. Good reminder. Haven't heard that one in years:

I think my favorite Ramones song is their cover of Spiderman.
They have to switch keys, actually use different chords for a change and throw in an actual guitar solo.

They have to switch keys,
Whoa, tectonic.
ok, Here's a twist, and matt05 dont raise your hand first give the other students a chance . . .
What zillion dollar internationally known superstar group with a ton of albums and long career did pretty much nothing but covers? Other than a few original ditties scattered here and there - maybe one or two per album early on, zero originals later - throughout a vast repertoire of covers?

Interesting point raised in the RRHOF thread, how most bands do covers, got me wondering which if any groups never covered anything?
Am guessing some prog or metal groups?
Yes
Sabbath
Jefferson Airplane?
Trower?
Deep Purple??. . . tricky question probably a cover or several lurking

Black Sabbath did a cover of Blue Suede Shoes

Did the group Boston ever do a cover??

They have to switch keys,
Whoa, tectonic.

not your answer and won't chime in with a guess but George thorogood usually does at least 7 covers per album. he is not a group or worth a zillion dollars and I'm not going to guess and blow your question for others to guess

not your answer and won't chime in with a guess
might as well guess, threads rollin on and that post is down the swirler by now

Love The Sex Pistols version of "My Way"

I think the last two Vanilla Fudge albums were all covers and their biggest hit was a cover so I'm going with that.

I’d say Joe Cocker or Rod Stewart.
Boston is a good call for no covers.
Rush had a long run until their covers album.

Queen?
The Cars?

They have to switch keys,

I learned a ton of guitar parts from these guys. If no one gets it then I will venture a guess later on.
They have about a million studio albums, a half million live ones and are on about a billion compilation albums.

Do you mean record studio album with covers ? or during a live show?
