Bands that never did covers

Interesting point raised in the RRHOF thread, how most bands do covers, got me wondering which if any groups never covered anything?
Am guessing some prog or metal groups?
Yes
Sabbath
Jefferson Airplane?
Trower?
Deep Purple?
?. . . tricky question probably a cover or several lurking

You can remove Yes, Jefferson Airplane, Trower and Deep Purple from the list.

Moody Blues?....
Don’t really know their stuff post Seventh Sojourn tho

every artist you named covered songs. Sabbaths first album has 2 covers plus the band played a few covers live prior to the first album coming out.
deep purple have done a ton of covers.
the first 2 YES albums have 4-5 cover tunes on it
the moody blues were mentioned but pre days of future passed did covers and I think after that the band did 1-2 covers

Steely Dan come to mind , they did play covers live but not sure they recorded covers .

"East St. Lois Toodle-Do" - Pretzel Logic LP. Almost a note-for-note reproduction of the Duke Ellington classic!

I've thought about this many times before and the only band that I know that never did covers, never put them on their albums and never did them when they were starting out was Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground.

The Police?

Looks like amyjared nailed one - I cant think of a Velvet.Underground cover. I figured my list was probably full of holes.
I think I got one : Ratt
Yeah I bet the Police - probably find a bunch when it is bands inventing new styles.

Led Zeppelin never played a song they didn't have song-writing credit for 😉
But seriously, Pink Floyd comes to mind. Traffic. Dire Strait (minus the Sting cameo)

Of course Pink Floyd ! Traffic most likely. I bet Emerson Lake and Palmer were out there in their own world, no covers.
Dead Kennedys! Nope they did theme from Rawhide.

Genesis ?

ELP did numerous covers - I love the one at the end of Pictures at an Exhibition - crazy analogy, but it was also the Bruins theme song when the telecasts came on back then - loved their Aaron Copland covers on Trilogy
cool thread

Yeah Genesis, gotta be a bunch when you get out into groups like that, creating their own worlds. Like Gentle Giant, Nektar, Kraftwerk
BigV youre the expert what about Little Feat? Highly unlikely for such a blues based group but I cant think of a cover they recorded.

44 Blues was a cover....

Spirit. Nah, didnt they rip off stairway?

Allan Tousant's "On Your Way Down"

in 1965 pink Floyd recorded a studio version of "I'm a king bee" that's on at least 2 pink Floyd releases
traffic did a bunch of covers live that are on official traffic live releases, "feelin good", "blind man", "technically "gimme some lovin" plus the song "john barleycorn" is a traditional song arranged by winwood.

ELP covered Aaron Copeland pretty well.

... also Holst (Planets". 😉

Probably a safe bet any group that went anywhere near the blues or traditional folk will have borrowed material.

my guess is probably at least 80% of the bands anyone has heard of has done at least 1 cover

tom waits
beach boys

The Beach Boys? Seems like Chuck got a little upset with them over their treatment of "Rock and Roll Music". "Sloop John B"? A Bahamian folk song! 😉

Ramones did a lot of covers....Palisades Park and the entire Acid Eaters album

beach boys and ramones did a lot

R. E. M. ?
Prince?

Tom Waits covered "Phantom 309", "CA Here I Come", "Somewhere",
I don't think you'll find a musician who never performed someone else's song.

R. E. M. ?
Prince?
prince had a few covers on the emancipation album at minimum plus he did live covers . also he did "everyday is a winding road" on an album
