Backstage Auctions - Capricorn Records

Someone posted info about a Capricorn Records auction @ Backstage Auctions. I assume, and would love to know definitively if, this was a Walden Estate type of house cleaning? There were some very cool and rare items up for auction. Most pricey, Duane's power of attorney letters. At one point they were close to $4,000. Never saw the ending bid.
I bid on one item, $10 above the opening bid and won. 14 original recording reels of Easy(Cowboy). One reel had the entire 3rd Cowboy lp "Boyer/Talton" listed on it. I'm psyched.
Ann Sandlin, or someone else, may be able to verify this, the auction stated prior to Cowboy the band used the name Easy. I never have heard that name..?
Anyone else take the plunge?

Scott Boyer wil be at the Big House on Apr.3, He could tell you
what you got. The first time I saw the band they were named
Easy.

Very cool. If I'm not mistaken, isn't the 3rd album the link below? If so, it's a great "album"? Let us know if you load it up on a reel to reel. I think this might be the album, but at this stage they were going by name Cowboy. Maybe a different album????

Martin, I'm fairly certain the one reel is the "Boyer/Talton" lp you referenced. The play list on the reel matches the lp, in exact order. Plus, the auction did list this as Easy/Cowboy. The was the 3rd lp by Cowboy and they had been using that name for a long time. It may be that one lp and a bunch of "Easy" recordings?
I'll be happy to share any information that comes from the tapes. I plan to have a "listening party" with a few of my friends.

That was & still is one of my favorite records. They went in a different direction from the earlier albums. I know...many years ago, but the songs are well written, musicianship is extraordinaire, and the recording was crisp. There's a reason Gregg used them as his core band when he did the orchestra tour mid '70's.

Agreed. The '74 Gregg Tour was my introduction to Cowboy. They added a lot to that record. Nice touch by Gregg to include them on the lp. Obvioulsy had great respect for the band and, as you mentioned, the songwriting, etc...
If anyone else reads this and knows if Johnny Sandlin, or Ann, is available for questions I'd like to contact them regarding these tapes. If he produced them, knows about them, can I play them, or should I do something to make sure the don't turn to dust running through a reel to reel. I have sent him an email via Duck Tape Records.... Just looking for some background on these tapes.

Good questions. Hope you get some answers. I have an old studio TEAC reel to reel, but if they were my tapes, I'd be really careful & get good advice before loading them up. What you have is a nice piece of history. I've got all the Boyer & Talton recordings & then some in one media format or another. They were / are quite good. I learned how to play guitar many years ago by using their songs as a teacher.

As luck would have it, Mr Sandlin did respond to my request for information and assistance. This is very cool. To look back at all Johnny had his hands in at Capricorn is, to say the least, amazing.
He said he remembers the tapes. He also verified, as have others here, that Cowboy was going by the name Easy early on. He told me he would give me some direction on ...playing the reels without distroying the tape. Also told me he would try to provide some background into the sessions, after he collects his thoughts. I will be sure to share it all with you, My Brothers & Sisters!
This kind of contact makes this site so unique and pleasurable.
