As we near the 50th Anniversary of the forming of the band next Tuesday, in celebration of that monumental occasion, I’d like to offer their show from September 3, 1971 in Montreal at The Place des Nations.

It's a rough sounding audience source of lesser quality that has chatter, some foul language and has only one thing really going for it…. the original lineup of the Allman Brothers Band!!!

It’s a fairly standard set, but, there are a couple of nice wrinkles to it, because you just never knew where Duane might take the band on any given night.

I have started a vine in the Music section of the Forum. Since this is a vine, which depends upon the speed of which it’s passed along to other interested listeners, I ask that as you receive it, you should burn it and turn it. Do NOT sign up for this if you’re going to receive it and then bog things down by keeping it from proceeding onto the next person.

I have asked that the first recipient be in the U.S., unless the first signee is Colin Harvey as I would gladly send it Harvey’s way if he’s numero uno.

Long live the memories of Duane and Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks! Best of all wishes to surviving members Jaimoe and Dickey Betts.

You all made some amazing music together! It enabled so many people from all walks of life to even have the experience and opportunity of making lifelong friendships through the availability of this site. Many thanks again to both Rowland & Lana for providing this place of musical fellowship!

Again, if interested, you can find the show in the Vines area of the Music section.

Enjoy!

Colour me stunned; I am amazed that there is a recording of the Montreal concert. Not
much seems to be known about this gig. That had to be the only time Duane (or any of
the original members) had been out of the US. Where can I see the set-list?

Thanks for sharing this. How did you get ahold of a recording of this concert?

Yes 50 years. When these six men came together, it was one of the most unique groupings of musicians in modern history. Each man brought a unique style to the table that blended perfectly with the other 5. Butch Trucks said it was as if the gods said you and you and you and you and you are meant to play together. The energy, creativity and innovative style is a rare thing indeed. John, Paul, George and Ringo are another grouping from the gods that comes to mind.

Often lately I've wondered what the Allman Brothers could have accomplished if the original 6 would have survived. They were just getting started when Fillmore East and Eat A Peach came out. Brothers and Sisters would have been a different album and the later albums certainly would have sold many more copies. They would have become a super group similar to the Rolling Stones and AC/DC.

As much as I love later lineups of the ABB, the reason the best version of Statesboro Blues, Must Have Done Somebody Wrong and You Dont Love Me are on Fillmore East is because later lineups didn't have Duane and Berry in them. Duane Allman was the big spark plug in that band. As much as I love Warren and Derek, they ain't no Duane Allman and never will be. Duane was a BIG deal like Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton. Duane was one 9f those rare musicians who had a vision, determination and energy that leads to super star status. Gregg and Dickey had it to a degree but not on Duane's level.
