I've seen Hiatt several times. The last show I caught was at Strathmore. He was promoting his new album and I felt the show lacked spontaneity. Now he is doing an acoustic tour and is playing tonight and tomorrow at Birchmere. I saw him do an acoustic show with Lyle Lovett at Birchmere a couple years ago and it was a magnificent experience.

I'm considering driving up tomorrow to catch his solo acoustic show. Anyone have any insights?

I've seen JH about 30 times since the mid 80s, always a good show, acoustic or "pluged-in".

Cool

I think John is one of the best at pulling off a true, solo show. I listen to a lot of his live shows while driving and I always find myself immersed in the music and tapping my feet and bopping around. Then I have to remind myself that I am listening to one guy playing, not a full band.

I've seen the Hiatt/Lovett show twice. Both times I thought Lyle had the better jokes while John had the better songs.

I'd like to catch him on this tour but I think that between our travelling schedules, we'll be at least 2.5 hours apart.

Let us know how the show is. I don't know any of his new tunes.

Really happy I went. Even the opener, Rick Brantley, was good. That venue is really suited toward acoustic performance. The Birchmere is very democratic. The earlier you get there, usually the better your seat. They give out numbers as you walk in like you get at a butcher shop. Then you wait until 6pm and they call the numbers and you enter the hall when your number is called. Often I'll get there at 3 to secure a great seat.

When I go by myself I can still usually get a great seat, because I'm on my own. There are 12 top tables in front of the stage. Usually you can easily find a single at one of those tables as was the case for Hiatt. I got the center table, 5 seats away from the stage, right in front of John.

He was very animated, in great voice, and his guitars - he played 4 different guitars - all sounded fantastic. The crowd was more rowdy than when I saw him with Lyle. That might be because he was standing instead of sitting. Lots of folks shouted out requests. I requested "One Way Out", but, of course, as he said, "Uh folks, I have a plan. I'm a little OCD. If I don't stick to my plan I might not make it through the show." I was not disappointed by his song selection.

He did pay homage to Prince by throwing in a "When Doves Cry" quote or two into "Cry Love", and a little "Purple Rain" into "Feels Like Rain". "Perfectly Good Guitar" was a real crowd pleaser as was "Tennessee Plates". So too were "Thing Called Love" and "Memphis in the Mean Time". I especially enjoyed "Have a Little Faith in Me" but... I always do.

I highly recommend doling out the money if he comes to a venue near you.

I actually feel like I got in free because I bought tickets for 4 more upcoming shows from the box office and avoided the ticket bastid fees. It was a great night.
