I'm going to be graduating undergrad in mechanical engineering next year. I hope to continue on to get a masters degree in machine design or something similar. Has anyone gone for a masters and can guide me through the process? or where do you personally work as a ME?

Where are you graduating from? Why do you want a Masters? What do you plan to do with it?

I graduated with a BSME in 1979 and spent the next 30+ years in the auto industry with the same company, mostly in manufacturing engineering. At the time a BSME and MBA was the popular way to go, so I started down that road, but after a couple semesters I realized the MBA would be no advantage unless I decided to go back into the job market so I dropped it. I have no regrets about that. After a few years job performance is more important than academic credentials.

I go to Wilkes University in NEPA. I believe the degree will allow me to work in settings such as research and development, or do design work in general. I currently work in a manufacturing setting as an intern. I understand what your saying about experience vs. education, but I also see an increase in the number of students in college. Hopefully the masters degree will allow me standout from the crowd and obtain a job doing more technical work.
