I took a guitar lesson via skype with Andy Aledort last night! It was incredible and I learned a ton! The guy knows his chops, talked about playing with Dickie, and showed me so much in just an hour. I recorded it via Quicktime and he showed me some Hendrix, some ABB and a Band song. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to improve their playing and grow as a guitar player. And the price was right.

How did you set up a lesson with him? How much for an hour long lesson?

Thanks,

Ryan

The free clips are all worthwhile and so are his instructional things for Truefire - well worth the $. But they can't compare to doing the one on one lesson with Andy. I've done several and we gig together regularly. Really inspiring and informative.

You can learn straight up parts or songs, or just start thinking about places you want to break through, compile a list of questions and get them all answered directly.. he gives you a tab and a video of the lesson...

He def. can tab High Falls, but no clue as to cost. Take a lesson and go back to the recording instead of getting a tab of the whole song...will help you with phrasing, timing, etc as well.

Does he charge you $75 for an hour, Alan? 😉

No knock on Andy or anyone else but no 1 hour lesson is worth that money. I have been teaching for 35+ years off and on and feel guilty for charging a fraction of that. There are much cheaper methods and even for 1 on 1 lessons there are local teachers who can do it and also could use some cash.

As a novelty thing, it is great and we all spend our disposable income in different ways. If paying that is something that you want then obviously go for it. But with the thousands of lessons on youtube and other sources for free, there has been no greater and cheaper time for lessons. Hell Andy himself has hours and hours out there for free.

Very few people can pick up enough in an hour lessons to warrant high costs.

I play casually, but had a pro player give my daughter lessons. The guy's a fabulous player and he charged $40 for a half hour and he came to the house. He stayed for 45 min's most nights due to chatting and such. It's the going rate for quality.

In the NY/NJ area. I think even the mediocre teachers at the music shops get between $25 and $30 for a half hour and you go to them.

True, and Andy is one of them. My dad took a lesson many years ago from Rev. Gary Davis. It was 2 hours and it cost him almost a whole week's salary. Davis was blind, but my dad says that he learned more in those 2 hours than he had in years and he still remembers stuff from it.
I used quicktime to record my lesson with Andy and we worked on songs that I've wanted to get little nuances on (Castles Made of Sand, Revival, The Shape I'm In) for a long time. He not only showed me what I wanted, but explained what he plays in band settings, how to do it if you're playing it solo, etc. Just watching him show me the dual guitar lines on Revival was awe-inspriring! He knows the fretboard and explained it to me in a way that worked--quick and succinct. Plus I got to hear about playing with the Experience Hendrix project and with Dickie, so it was worth it!

I've paid it to him - insisted on doing so! Honestly, he's helped me many times with little things over the years - how to resolve a little lick, best choice for a passing chord, whatever... And I've said to him, "ok, I want a full hour. Treat me like everyone else."

It's well worth it IMHO.

Hey Alan,

I've mentioned this to Joe Bell before, but with your background and connections it might be a better thought for you. How bout a 4th volume of the ABB guitar tab books? It could focus on Where it All Begin and Hittin the Note, as well as picking up a few songs that were left off the 1st 3 volumes. Where it All Begins has some of the biggest fan favorite songs from the post reunion years. Hittin the Note is the only ABB album with Derek's work on it, sure some other people would like a view into Derek's work with the Brothers. Both should be represented in the "Definitive Collection for Guitar."

Tracklist could look like this:

Drunken Hearted Boy
High Falls
True Gravity
All Night Train
Sailin Cross the Devil's Sea
Back Where it All Begins
Soulshine
No One Left to Run With
Firing Line
High Cost of Low Living
Desdemona
Who to Believe
Old Friend

That is a solid collection of 13 songs, worthy of a Volume 4.

Alan, maybe you could be a champion for the cause!

Ryan

Ryan,

I'd gladly champion that cause. Not sure how much impact I can really have though.

Maybe between you, Andy, Guitar World, the ABB, and Joe Bell y'all could make it happen? Doesn't have to be through Hal Leonard and be Vol. 4.

Kick it around, maybe something would develop. Or maybe it makes more sense to bring the idea to Hal Leonard?

Your efforts would be greatly appreciated by me and other hacks that don't have the ear to pick up riffs, melodies, and what not.

Thanks,

Ryan
