Caught this tour at Oak Mountain, one of my daughter’s first “real” concerts.

Great night of music.

Saw this tour in Las Vegas with Susan Tedeschi opening and I think another lady played before Susan. Had never heard of Susan before that night. She rocked real good. Had a green Tele with lots of signatures on the body. The show was taped for TV by Nascar but when I saw it on TV they used only one of Susan's songs and about 5 of the brothers songs. A very good version of Ramblin' Man made the TV cut.

Derek was poker or stoned faced all night and looked a little intimidated but his playing,, especially slide, was real good. I seem to remember Gregg being rather stoned faced too. Didnt talk much between songs. He would be that way in the ABB some nights but never in his solo band.

Dickey was in fine form the entire show. Real good Ramblin Man, Blue Sky etc. Hottest Dickey I had seen since a couple Jack Pearson shows in 1997 and the early 90's with Warren. Dickey was playing his old road worm mid 50's Stratocaster as he is in this video here. Dickey was playing that old Strat real good in Las Vegas and he was center stage and leading the band. It seemed to be Dickey's band and he was in charge. I remember Butch and Dickey making eye contact a couple of times when Derek was soloing and both broke into big smiles. Butch wrote on his page on this site in 1999 that Dickey was very inspired by Derek and that Derek reminded Dickey of Duane. Less than a year later Dickey was voted out for the summer then he sued the band etc. How things can change so quickly.

My only show that tour was at the World Theater outside Chicago and the sound was a giant cluster **** and it forever distorted my view on that lineup, so I'm grateful to hear some good quality, tasty playing here - especially from Dickey.

True Gravity is such a great tune. Forgot how long they'd stretch Blue Sky in the late Dickey years

It's nice to see there is some decent footage of this lineup, since Peakin' at the Beacon is the popular documentation of this period. Peakin' has it's moments, but it's pretty clunky at times. On paper, this lineup is lights out - internal tensions aside, who knows how Derek could have pushed Dickey? But it was not to be...

It's easy to forget just how amazing Derek was at just 19 years old, he already had amazing command of these tunes. Also interesting how far his slide-less playing stretched out during this period playing next to Dickey, Jimmy, and Warren. Within 2 or 3 years he was doing absolutely insane stuff without his slide.

Dickey never really did know what to do with "Tombstone Eyes". It had a great title, but was a bunch of nostalgic nonsense. I never thought it fit the band, but somehow it managed to hang around tours for 3 years and never got any more interesting. By the time it showed up on Let's Get Together it sounded more like a Bon Jovi song.

I've also never heard any ABB guitarist make a wah pedal fit on any Allman Brothers song.

Still, great show, love hearing this lineup. I loved how light and jammy these late 90s shows were.

My first show outside of Michigan was this one. And I agree with your assessment of that evening. But I don't recall it being the fault of the band. I thought at the time it was the worst venue I had ever been to. And after living in Chicago for 15 years, my opinion has not really changed too much. But I thought the band was fine.

The next night they played outside of Indy, Noblesville I think it is. That was night and day different. I camped outside of the venue and met a nice group of people and had fun.

I thought the show was much better. I was in the second or third row in front of Derek and he did seem somewhat intimidated but he did a great job. The set list was pretty close to the night before but there were some differences. It seemed to be the Dickey show but it was better than the prior night.

Still a great weekend!

God, I miss those two chords jams that just elevate. Dickey created some of the best jam vehicles and had some of the masters take them to outer space.

Saw the same tour in Asheville with Susan Tedeschi opening. While Susan played a nice young man asked if he could sit by my wife and myself. We chatted for a while and when he left he signed my ticket stub....Derek was quiet and polite even then.

I saw New Orleans at the Saenger Theatre and Mansfield/Boston at Great Woods. Both really good shows and had a blast with my concert mates. Loved what that lineup did with True Gravity in particular.

Saw them one night at the Beacon and MusicMidtown ATL in 2000...not as good as shows, but both enjoyable.

The shows were better than the recordings from that lineup which will always show more warts you pick up in a big crowd and sound system (Warren's harmony vocals were missing as a key ingredient and there were a fair share of half step off bum notes).

I always thought it would be amazing if Derek, Dickey,Jack,warren, Duane,Devon,Jaimoe, oteil decided to record some music together.

I added links to the rest of this show on my second post. I think this lineup would had great potential if it had last a couple more years.
