These guys play well.  There are currently "tribute" bands on tour representing the Eagles (Hotel California Tour) and Pink Floyd (actually a couple).  All of these tribute acts play the music well.  What these bands will never be able to capture or convey is the EXPERIENCE of seeing the authentic item - no matter how good they are.

I remember during the 80s ( ... some of it, at least) when various soft drink bottlers wanted to steal or even sue Coca-Cola for their formula.  The owner/rep etc. for Coke was very dismissive of these attempts at cloning his company's product.  He said words to the effect of, even if they had the formula - they'd never catch the Coke spirit.  He cited the bottle shape, the insignia red logo and other properties of true and authentic Coca-Cola.

I'm sure that all of these acts provide good bang-for-the-buck.  Things like the LOUDNESS of Marshall amps cranked up to achieve the proper break-up, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with sweaty patchouli scented co-listeners, the aroma of cannabis, even paper tickets.  The music was certainly the main draw but there was so much more to the actual experience.

Again - I'm glad these acts are there for the people who missed the moment.

EDIT:  I fupped duck!  That Eagles  Hotel California tour is actually the Eagles - with an orchestra.  Seems like they'd just finished a tour, so I thought this was tribute presentation.  Shoulda known that Henley would never allow that!  😉

I have seen several Allman tribute bands including the band led by David Goldflies and the Friends of the Brothers in addition to the Allman Family Revival.

But my favorite Allman’s tribute band currently Steelin’ Peaches based out of Florida.  Think the Allman’s music played on speed and I mean that in a good way.  A tremendous amount of exuberance and talent.  These guys are going to soon break nationally.  Mark my words.

@agerst1574 Stealin' Peaches is pretty great, they put their own spin on the music which I think is key to setting themselves apart from the zillion other ABB tributes out there.

There are a LOT of tribute bands out there these days, and they dominate the calendar at some venues. When an owner hires a regular cover band, people might not really know what the band is all about ("We play classic rock"). However, if a band declares that they will deliver a very specific thing, like "the music from the Grateful Dead's first ten years" or "Neil Young's 'Harvest' album, note for note," that has a built-in audience.

I'm a big fan of a few of the Genesis tribute bands. Genesis ain't around to play those tunes, and in particular, I like seeing their 1970s Gabriel stuff, so it's a real treat. Plus, we get to see them at small theaters with great sound, etc.

I think the guitar player in the middle of the stage has a fake moustache on...

Anyways, they sounded pretty good and the keyboard player sang real well.

I have been on the fence about going to see a tribute band. Nothing against them, some of them sound really good. I think its just a me thing, dunno. I have a friend who is in his late 60's who grew up seeing these bands in they're prime during the 70's. He went and saw Jason Bonhams Led Zep Experience and raved about it.  One of these days I will break down and go I am sure. Now if there was a UFO tribute band near by , I might be convinced. I know Mike McCready did a tribute thing to them a few years ago  called" Flight to Mars."

The guys in this tribute band also dress up like the original band members. I think it's pretty tacky. But I'm with you, I don't really do tribute bands. Unless they put their own spin on the material, I think they're kind of silly. Nothing wrong with them, but just not for me.

@jszfunk Some of these "tribute" bands - i.e. bands who practically dress in costume - really come off kinda cheesy (to me).  Almost like Bizarro World in those really old Superman comics!

I've said before (I'm old, I repeat myself) - I'd rather see a band like Mule, TTB -even Los Lobos - who throw an occasional ABB song into the setlist.  Honestly, I've heard all of the original recordings, countless live shows etc. from every incarnation of the Allman Brother's Band ... about a gazillion times.  Truthfully, I almost never actually spin these recordings up because I have seen/heard them so often.  For much of the last 10 - 20 years of the band's existence, it was about seeing them live and socializing with all of the fellow minded fans, followers and aficionados .  I guess I'm just not interested in seeing a band (costumed or not) regurgitate note-for-note versions of the music that I've heard so often - no matter how good the band is.

@rusty You voiced my feelings on tribute bands perfectly. I get if you just really want to hear your favorite band's music live, go see a tribute band, especially if you live in a smaller market that isn't on the tour route. But I have so many recordings of the Allman Brothers, I don't need to go see a pale imitation. Some tribute bands are very good, there are lots of talented musicians in every town. I'd just rather see a band, even a cover band, with their own identity doing their own unique take on someone else's material rather than a 2nd generation copy.

There's a guy who has an ABB tribute band in the northeast, and he brags about how it's the best ABB tribute band and the greatest recreation of the Fillmore East shows. And I'm like, you don't understand this band at all. They never wanted to recreate anything twice and there is no "best".

@porkchopbob Well that was right on the money!! A tribute band that plays At Fillmore East note for note, show after show, doesn't interest me. Indeed the Allman Brothers Band played the songs on Fillmore East that way ONE time!! They never played it note for note again. We got use to hearing it the way it was done on the album from playing it over and over.k

The ABB had an outline or arrangement they used every night but those too would change later on several songs. One Way Out and Southbound come to mind. Inside those arrangements the soloist played spontaneously each time so the note selection would be different each night. And until the soloist played the change notes signaling the end of his solo, the length of the solo on several songs would vary from night to night.

I'd rather see a band that doesn't do it note for note like the record.

In a Warren Haynes interview from 1994 he talked about how even he would sometimes be surprised by his own solo. Warren would play a lick in a solo then Jaimoe or someone would play something unexpected in the hole Warren allowed to open up between passages in a solo and Warren would often respond to that and his solo would then go to a place unexpected by even Warren. I like that creating on the fly.

Dickey said the little lullaby he slipped into during his solo on Whipping Post on Fillmore East was completely on the fly and they had never done that before.

Here's one I shot in 2013 at Don Quixote's (now Felton Music Hall) in Felton in the Santa Cruz mountains (Bay area).  That's our own Goldtop (Ron Tomasello) playing Duane (red cap).  Freestone Peaches is still together in fact they just did a show @ Sweetwater Music Hall Saturday 1/7/23.  Singer Jefferson Bergey is still with them but to my knowledge every other band member has changed.  Ron has not been with them for maybe 6 or 7 years.

Thanks Rob, There's actually 3 original members. Jeff Faust and I put the band together in 2012. He's still the bass player. Bergy on vocals...and Mark Corsolini on drums. Ray Hauck now plays the Jamioe drum spot. Ned Hachett took my place and Mike Berry is now the Dickey position. I left in December of 2013. I went to the Sweetwater gig in January. First time I'd seen the band since I left.

That band sounds good to me too but I must say I'm not a big tribute band fan. There is the story that Elvis put on sun glasses and altered his hair a bit and entered an Elvis impressionist contest and out of nine contestants Elvis came in third!!

Here is THE Allman Brothers Band in January 1976. This is a weird show and perhaps not one to copy.

To me Gregg Allman seems drunk and off a little. Dickey is a little erratic and may be too far in the bag too. It's still an interesting show as in the middle they play an instrumental I've never heard before.

Someone is playing slide guitar in the middle and Must Have Done Somebody Wrong is oddly performed and the recorder must have stopped or they had a serious train wreck and edited it out for this tape as Statesboro Blues is also odd with someone on slide and Dickey on lead.

But it also has moments when they are really going!!!!!

When I lived in DC I enjoyed going to the State Theater in Falls Church, VA.  Jimmy Herring Band, Victor Wooten, several Pat Metheny shows.

Nearly all tributes now.

Someone texted me and said they remember the January 24th 1976 Allman Brothers Band show and unfortunately he can't remember who joined the band on slide for a few songs at the beginning of the second set. But he DOES remember that after High Falls and the end of the first set Gregg Allman said they would be back in 10 minutes. But Gregg didn't return in 10 minutes. After several more minutes the other members kicked off an instrumental he too had never heard and didn't know the name. During this instrumental Gregg finally returned on organ but he seems out of sorts on the next numbers which had a slide player and those songs were kinda train wrecks.

The end of High Falls is at 1:00:00 then the strange instrumental fades in and continues for several minutes. Not sure the name of it or if it had a name. May just be the band jamming until Gregg returned.

Very cool, a forgotten little 10 min blues interlude of sorts - yeah who could that slide player be - agree that it seems like just waiting for Gregg to return

Charlie Daniels was the opener for the 1/24/76 show and the previous 3 shows so perhaps it’s him joining in? That’s my best guess

@eric373737 It's interesting right before Ramblin' Man Dickey says " Here's another real good one!" and it sounds like Chuck and Butch begin laughing about that comment from Dickey.

Must have been some inside joke or Dickey saying " Here's another real good one" because some other artist they were discussing said that during their set.
