ABB 10 years ago

I’m a day late for the first night - but if you have them - spin 10/3/09 and 10/4/09 today. Jimmy Herring subbing for Warren who had travel issues and Danny Louis on piano as Gregg had an ailing shoulder on night one, then Warren returns with a ferocious vengeance on 10/4 - again with Danny on keys. Two great, unique shows from a great year in ABB history.

I was there....Great Show

I just looked 10/3/09 up, thought there was a mistake when I saw an 8 song set list (including Encore). But that's what happens when you open with a 30 minute "Mountain Jam" and end with a 20 minute "Liz Reed". Sounds epic.

Did Gregg sing or did he sit out the show?

Works for me!
Didn't see that show but caught the two in L.A. at the Greek Theater during that tour. Good times! The band never made it back to California or the west coast again.

A White Stratocaster. Gregg owned 42 guitars when he passed according to Devon Allman and he gave all if them to Devon. There is a tobacco burst Strat and a black Martin Johnny Cash acoustic Devon showed the guy on rig rundown that are his favorites and Gregg loved them too. And Gregg left Devon Duane's guitar strap with the rings. Remember seeing Duane wearing that in the early years.
Sometimes I'm kinda bumbed the ABB is over. I saw my first show in January 1970 and that original band WAS the Allman Brothers to me and their high water mark performance wise. The Chuck/Lamar lineup was their commercial peak. But from 1989 to 2014 there were some real fine shows I really enjoyed even though I was still missing Duane and Berry and later Dickey. But with Gregg and Butch now gone it would be next to impossible for the band to come back. I've thought about a few lineups but it probably wouldn't work. Had Jaimoe in the mix but not Dickey. Maybe Dickey could play a short set with the band if he could get his chops back some. Duane Betts and Derek or Warren or Jack would be good but I guess one couldn't really call it the Allman Brothers. Too many originals over on the other side now. Yep I guess it's over.

I know Devon was very close with his Dad but it surprises me that Gregg's two other sons Elijah Blue and Michael would not rate a gift of a guitar or two. Probably not nearly as accomplished as Devon but fact remains they are both guitar players. And what about Island? I've heard her get up and jam with Daddy, she's one hell of a vocalist.

Yes you are right robslob. But that is what Devon tells the rig rundown guy on YouTube. Gave all of them to Devon.
Gregg was worth about 15 million when he died so I'm sure they all got a million or so..
Devon is likely a millionaire now and Duane Betts lives like he is. Flies all over the world. Recently vacationing in Florence, Italy and Paris, France. And now honeymooning in Bali. Dickey must be behind his son. And that is cool. That is being a good father. Duane Betts' three main guitars he uses on the road are a Dickey Betts signature custom Les Paul he says his father gave him. And on certain songs Duane plays a 1956 Fender Strat hardtail and a 1961 Gibson ES-335, both of which Dickey used a lot in the ABB in the 1990's. Those are very valuable classic guitars. The 3 guys I knew in the 70's trying to make it in music were playing Squire and off brand guitars that looked similar to a Strat or Les Paul.

Did Gregg play guitar on every song that night? including Mountain jam and Liz reed??

a little late to this thread; We were there for both nights in Charlotte in 2009. First night Saturday, ABB was to open and Warren & Steph's charter out of NY blew a tire on the tarmac b4 takeoff. they could not get other arrangements to get to charlotte in time for the show. Story also was that Gregg had dropped a bike he was loading into a trailer and messed up a shoulder and a couple of fingers on his right hand. He stood @ mic and strummed a whit Fender when singing. Brothers took the curveball and made the best of it. Derek & Jimmy took Mtn Jam to the stratosphere. They made a quick announcement on stage and put on a great improv show. warren didn't get there in time to play at all on first night. 2nd night ABB closed the show, & they came out with a vengeance and Warren was on fire all night. I have always thought that the Sunday show was one of the best I witnessed from the last incarnation of the band. great memories. will have to pull out those instant lives and give 'em a listen this week.
