I saw the Allman Joys play this song in '66. Gregg sang it very low down (like Stormy Monday). At first I was shocked by the lyrics (I had never heard the song before) being sung by a white man but then I realized that traveling through the south with long blonde hair could have put them in the same situation. It was the most soulful performance I ever heard but I never heard them play it again.

I would love to hear some more of the Hourglass' R&B I wish that there were tapes which had gotten released. You'd think with all the jamming they did with well known artists that something decent would have been recorded.

I worked on a live Allman Joys release with Kirk West over 20 years ago. It was really good. I wrote liner notes. It was mastered and ready to go and got shut down by contract disputes. I do not know the details or why it has not come out since... but it's shame. It's much better than the Hourglass studio tracks.

I cringe every time I hear of the missed opportunities like this live album not coming out.

I wonder how much great quality material is just sitting there collecting dust and not making anyone any money or bringing enjoyment to any ears.

I LOVE Down in Texas. One of my top favorite Allman songs of all time. Love Gregg's voice. Love Duane's guitar on that one, very tasty. And an awesome groove.

FACEPALM!

I am heartened to hear that there was an attempt. Kirk, LEAK THE TAPES, LEAK THE TAAAAAPES!
