50 Greatest Bass Players

Feel free to discuss....or argue about this absurd ranking:

36. Tina Weymouth
What the actual eff? In front of:
Donald 'Duck' Dunn
Nathan East
Louis Johnson
Roger Glover
Berry Oakley
Ummm...the list is rather solid. The ranking order is...

The ranking order is...
Off bass?

I like how in their playlist of the best example of Berry's bass playing they choose "Ramblin' Man" and not "Whipping Post".
A lot of the people that I would put on my top bassists list are in this poll, but the order is questionable.
Off the top of my head they are missing:
James Jamerson
George Porter
Oteil Burbridge
Willie Weeks
Jack Cassidy
Noel Redding
Billy Cox
Alphonso Johnson
Conrad Lozano from Los Lobos
RoccoPrestia from Tower Of Power
If the list was background vocals by a bassist then Michael Anthony. 🙂

Look again.

i'm surprised to see Roger Waters listed so high - above Chris Squire.
Waters is a great songwriter, and his basslines play important roles in the songs, but they rarely strike me as remarkable playing. I guess you could make the Ringo argument, that his basslines are perfectly matched to serve the song and thus are highly musical and worthy of praise. Maybe I'll re-listen to consider this one.

Missed that one. Well the list is slightly better now.

I wonder if it was name recognition and the bass line from "Money" being so iconic?

These lists are always a waste of time. With an exception or 2, the top 5 ... gotta be a joke!
Oteil not on the list? This list is garbage!

at least Randy Jackson didn't make the list

I really don't get to bent on lists or rankings or whatever, but how you could not have Chris Squire in the top 5 is inconceivable.
Does It Really Happen
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

If Jack Casady isn't on the list I won't bother looking at it. The man wrote the book on freestyle bass.

agree on Jack.
a great oversight was skipping one of the most innovative and versatile players of all time-Rick Danko.

James Jamerson should be One or Two.
