LEE COUNTY -
For the 12th year in a row, an anonymous donor has dropped a $20 Liberty Eagle gold coin in one of the Salvation Army's red kettles.
The coin was found Tuesday in a kettle at a Publix in East Fort Myers. And, as in years past, it was wrapped in a note the reads, "In loving memory of Mimi."
The organization will have the 1904 coin professionally appraised, but online collectors are selling similar coins for up to $1,600.
The identities of the donor and Mimi continue to be a well-kept secret.
“We may never know who Mimi or the donor are, but I thank God for them both! The donation of this coin will go a long way in helping the less fortunate in our community," said Major Tim Gilliam, Area Commander for The Salvation Army.
