10-29-1971 - Play All Night!

For us old codgers still hanging around here. where were you when you heard the terrible news that night! I was asleep @ home, and had the habit of sleeping with my stereo softly playing music all night. Had the radio on WBBQ out of Augusta Ga. and sometime after midnight they announced Duane's accident & death. Sat straight up in bed, with an "Oh NO!" Had just seen them play @ Clemson 6 weeks before and like most of my CU classmates, we were consumed musically with all things Allman, the band of the people. WBBQ then proceeded to play Allman Brothers all night. Couldn't believe that after only three short years and just as they were taking flight, the muse was gone. The folks here @ work will get a steady feed of @ Fillmore East & Eat A Peach today!

I fell asleep with my local rock station on. Woke up in the middle of the night to IMOER. The DJ said "That's in memory of Duane Allman." I was like "SHit; they got that wrong."

Remembering Duane on October 29th of each year gets a little more emotional as the years move along. Still moved by the way The Brothers ended things a year ago with their final set ending on the anniversary of Duane's passing .

I was 14 and a freshman in HS. A new buddy had turned me onto The Brothers. Every day after school I would listen to AFE until I knew every note. For the next 7-8 years anything Allman consumed my life. The ABB, The Gregg Allman Tour, Richard Betts and his All-American Tour, Sea Level, Great Southern ; if they were in the NYC area , me and my boys were there. What a wonderful period in my life. Of course the Beacon Years were fabulous as well. But I was older then and could not do all the things I had been doing. Nevertheless, that man - Duane Allman - has had a profound impact on my life. God Bless Him.
THE SPIRIT OF BROTHER DUANE ALLMAN LIVES !

Just about the same here JerryJuice. Well said.

I was at my girl friends house, sophomore year of HS. Her sister attended Duke and had seen the band, too. I saw the ABB in July of '71. They changed my life. I was kind of young, 8th grade going into HS, and living in a place with little exposure to the "outside" world of Rock & Roll. I mention this because by the time I found out, it was a year later. She said..."I think one of the brothers has died, or maybe both of them". I was in shock. I remember saying..."No way. I'm their biggest fan. I would know about this". It was obviously true, and I was devastated for a time. I remember going into my bedroom and listening to EAP and LAFE straight though, loud. None of my friend knew about the death of Duane, either.

Exactly!...SF & OC here

I was sleeping over at a buddy's house after a heavy drinking session (parents away!). It must have been Saturday 30th October.
I went to bed and instinctively tuned the bedside radio/ alarm to Radio Luxembourg as I did at home. The DJ was David "Kid" Jensen and he was playing the whole of AFE. When he eventually cut in, he said that it was to commemorate Duane Allman, who had died in an accident.
I didn't know the ABB's music that well at the time but I knew that what I was hearing was amazing.
I was hooked after that.

My high school teacher came into class and told us, we all saw he was shook up. After that he got me on board by seeking out who he was talking about. Their music has been with me every step of the way in my life. Thank you Duane for your gift and vision.
