I went to see Paul McCartney last night. All I can say is wow! What a great show. Almost 3 hours with no intermission. What an amazing voice. He must of played 50 songs.
For those not makin' tracks to Macon, Richey has kindly added some pix from the city to the "Places" section of the Media Gallery. Thanks, Richey!
Take care and know that you are loved,
Lana
The Band.. Gary & Marley, remember us talking about them in the Beacon elevator?
Robbie Roberston has an uncanny knack of distorting stories to somehow enhance his reputation. Where I'm from, it's called an EGO problem. The Band story is well known, but also check out his "stories" behind the Basement Tapes. He tries to leave an impression that him & Dylan were actually pumping out those songs.... which wasn't the case at all. While he is a great talent, it is rather questionable on what his actual input was to their catalogue. There is no WAY that he was able to pull off some of the arrangments without input.
Has anyone else read the liner notes to the Band reissue cds? Have to roll your eyes at some of the things written in there.
Plus, the most talented members (although Robertson would certainly disagree) were Garth Hudson, & the troubled Richard Manuel. May he rest in peace.
Rock of Ages has Garth simply taking over. To my opinionated ears, I like it better than the pompous Last Waltz. However, it is AWESOME to see Muddy come out, as well as Van's performance on Caravan. When Van is ON, he is a tough act to follow.
Bill Graham did not have nice things to say about Robertson regarding the performances of the Last Waltz. Check out his book.
JFC:D,
Thanks for the reminder & your great bro too:) Drive safe and think of us NYer's not there 🙁 Party hardy for us too!!

Brof...there are hardly any shots of Richard in the LW and very few of Garth, who really was leading the band. Another interesting thing is all the overdubs on the soundtrack. Levon refused to overdub any of his parts. There were plenty of voice, guitar and bass overdubs though. Robbie also wanted to boot Muddy Waters off the bill to make room for Neil Diamond whom he was producing at the time.
yes the Band saga is another tragedy...
I saw the Band several times..
the Last being the summerof '76 in Asbury Park at the Convention Hall...Aztec-2-Step opened for them...
They Blew me away that night...
their albums, to me, can never duplicate the POWERFUL sound that group of guys put out in concert..
it was simply amazing...i guess Rock of Ages comes closest from my experiences..
more unbelieveable.. at the time in '76 , was that they were callin it quits when they seemed to be at the top of their game.
ahh but the relation "ship" was sinking..
same old dog do...
but what a group of musicians they were..

Johnny....I don't know. It's a tough assignment but I'll try my best not to collapse into a babbling puddle of mush during your absence though I may need a little help from my friends.Hey, here's an idea...send "Happy Birthday Ken" over to the GB to take your seat while you're off Macon memories at the GABBA shindig. Berry Happy Birthday!! *smile*
JFC, be careful out there and get some sleep tonight. You will be grateful you did. Talked to Barry and he says he is primed and ready to play all night. Hey Red Dog, you with us? :DHappy bday to bro Ken and BO!!!EAPFP
Today would have been Berry Oakley's 54th. It's also my brother Ken's 54th. To the greatest bass player I ever saw, and to my great brother who brought us all the complete 7/24/71 show, thank you.Johnny
Well, the GABBAland Express is loaded and the driver will be soon, and we're headin' south. We had a massive electrical storm come through the FishCamp last evening and were without power from 7 pm until 6am. Looks like a lot of great posting last night. Karen, thanks for reminding to update that site. We had some administrative turnover and haven't been able to find the time to get it right. Leah, we're actually seeing Barry Friday night (yaaay!!). Jeanne, are you going to be allright with me gone from the GB for a few days? Try to be strong. Lam, we're leaving in an hour, are you coming or not? Anyway, directionalizer is set for Macon, and all systems are go!! Goliath, see ya tomorrow morning!!Johnny
Marley, Thanks for the write-up about the Last Waltz. I saw yesterday on amazon.com that there will be a 4 CD box set released of the Last Waltz-there must be a ton of unreleased material. Levon's beef with Robbie wasn't just about writing credits-Levon also felt that Robbie hogged the spotlight during the LW and was more interested in mugging for the camera than being a part of a group effort and that he conspired with Scorcese during the editing process as well to cut most of the band footage at the expense of showcasing Robbie Robertson. Levon felt that what was originally a great idea-throw a party with the band's best friends to celebrate 25 years of great music-degenerated into the "Robbie Robertson show" and if you watch the finished product, you definitely come away with that impression. At least I do, every time I watch it. Still a great film, though. And yes, Neil Young is toasted, and not just on vitamin C, either-he's pretty ripped on tequila as well. And at Marley's suggestion, I will offer up 6-27-71, the ABB at the Fillmore East on the final night (but the early show, not the great, rumored lost late show) for B & P (one disc) to the first five who e-mail me. This show is legendary (the YDLM is, in my opinion, possibly the best available with the exception of the Soul Sacrifice from WLPJ studios.) Bill Graham's introduction is priceless, "...the best of them all, the Allman Brothers!"
Hey peachjaman. Glad to hear you went out to see Lucinda Williams. I think she is a great songwriter. Her lyrics really hit the mark.
To jump on The Band thread, Rhino Records is releasing a 4-CD expanded, remastered "Last Waltz" on April 16, and MGM is releasing the DVD May 7. I seem to remember a report that Neil Young had a huge "coca cola" boogar hanging from his nose that was air-brushed out of the movie. It will be interesting to see if it's reinstated for the revised version.
...paging Mr. Howie T. from NYCity...paging Howie T...
Yes it is very sad Peachnutt . Hard to imagine two guys going through so much together and now they can't even speak to each other. 😮
Goliath,
Maybe those type of "ideas" come through
a guy who lived it a bit. An Arkansas guy named Levon:) Think that's part of his beef with Robbie. Very sad though.
And such an incredible BAND,no doubt!:D

😉
Lam,Levon has some issues with writing credits? This is probably what happened: Robbie would bring a melody and some chord changes and present them to the band and then...At any rate, that was an aptly titled group. How the hell did someone from Canada come up with such a powerful song about the South, such as The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down?EAPFP
Morning all:)
Wayne, The Eat A Peach "One Way Out"
is from 6/27/71. Not March. Tom mentions
the June "OWO" was much hotter that the
March-Fillmore East version. 😀
The March version has a some "miscues".
