The Band.. Gary & Marley, remember us talking about them in the Beacon elevator?
Robbie Roberston has an uncanny knack of distorting stories to somehow enhance his reputation. Where I'm from, it's called an EGO problem. The Band story is well known, but also check out his "stories" behind the Basement Tapes. He tries to leave an impression that him & Dylan were actually pumping out those songs.... which wasn't the case at all. While he is a great talent, it is rather questionable on what his actual input was to their catalogue. There is no WAY that he was able to pull off some of the arrangments without input.
Has anyone else read the liner notes to the Band reissue cds? Have to roll your eyes at some of the things written in there.
Plus, the most talented members (although Robertson would certainly disagree) were Garth Hudson, & the troubled Richard Manuel. May he rest in peace.
Rock of Ages has Garth simply taking over. To my opinionated ears, I like it better than the pompous Last Waltz. However, it is AWESOME to see Muddy come out, as well as Van's performance on Caravan. When Van is ON, he is a tough act to follow.
Bill Graham did not have nice things to say about Robertson regarding the performances of the Last Waltz. Check out his book.
