Some of us forum dwellers will meet up with others here between DTB and ABB at the below mentioned designated place. It'll be quite a crowd! 🙂
Ron - your attention didn't wander. You were just lookin' for the groove... He said (and this is all paraphrased) "We're gonna feature Jaimoe on this next song. I'll give you guys a little Macon history lesson. As you may or may not know, Jaimoe used to play with the late, great Otis Redding. And the last show Jaimoe played with Otis was in Roanoke, Virginia".
just in from another GREAT show, looking at a few things here, probably should say that curfew at the venue was 11:30 and the band ended at 11:30 almost on the dot, squeezing every last bit of time they could.
a highlight that hasn't been mentioned, but might have gone unnoticed by some whose attention wandered was the little introduction warren gave to "IBLYTL(TSN)"... and if you think about it, maybe, just maybe, that had something to do with why there was a spotlight on Jaimoe, why Jaimoe was so strong and passionate during the drum section -- which was all about jaimoe last night, hats off to butch and marc -- and why the WTCBU section of MJ was what that was all about last night.
you can't make me any happier than to sell me a seat where I can spend 40 minutes or so watching Yonrico Scott and, lined up behind & slightly to the side of him, Marc! Unless you follow it immediately thereafter with a killer Allman Brothers show.
More later, when I recover. Anyone write down exactly waht it was that Warren said? What he said, the look on his face as he said it, and the song that followed were powerful momenst I'll treasure for a long, long time.
Unless of course I just imagined it. Possible.
OK folks....I'm hoping to make it to the Potter pre-show during an "extended" lunch hour tomorrow. But since I know that their house will
be tough to make for a number of people, I thought we should set up a
meeting place at the show between dTb and ABB sets. I'll be parking in the east parking lot & coming in the main gate (which actually is the harder of the two entrances to find coming off the highway - you go right as you exit I75 south). Probably not getting to show prior to 6:30 umortunately.
I figure we could meet up between bands between merchandise stand and the gate by the east concessions (left side as you face the stage - the side Gregg & Derek are on, same side as Sections 207 and 103).
I know tons from the listserv & Guest Book will be there: Lana, Neal
Barfield, Rob Johnson, "Great" Scott, the Potters, Nancy SS, Jason Chastain, CeeCee and many others. I hope to see some of you folks if your at the the Potters early, but if not, I hope to see you at that show.
Shoot me an email if you want to exchange cell#s or if you have a better meeting spot. We'll be sitting in Section 103, row 14, first 4 seats on the aisle. I know we're sitting near the Potters & Barfields. I'll be in
a classic Eat a Peach T, glasses, tan baseball hat, early 30s, short hair
etc etc. My buddies are more recognizable: Bob is atleast 6-5 and Joey has thick long hair & either a Frogwings/DTB shirt on.
I'll re-post if anyone has a more obvious meeting spot.

Carol and CeeCee: GREAT posts! Thanks!
Piazza B&P closed. Look forward to spreadin' these tunes.
First of all, I have say a big THANK YOU to the band for my Mountain Jam for the Mountains last night....yes, it was a different version, but that is what I love so much about the ABB and other jambands....it's not the same tonight and the same notes tomorrow night....for me, it was very enjoyable and thanks again.....
The best part of the evening was sharing it with my wonderful old and new friends....it seems that our circle of friends and family keeps growing and growing and growing....Glenn B and Mike, thanks for the ride and tour of Salem after the show....teehee!....Ron E and Kirby, a big thanks to the two of you for making my night so special....Jim and Jennifer, wonderful to see you again...Steve, I'm looking forward to seeing you at Derek's Visulite show in late October....Denise and Christine, what fun after the show and at breakfast this morning....see you gals, next tour....
As I was traveling a short distance down I-85 , I wanted to be traveling on Southbound for Friday's show in Atlanta...(I still might!!) If anyone at all is sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to go or not, I encourage you to go....before the show last night, I was wondering if Raleigh had just been one of those few special elusive nights that you are blessed with...no, it wasn't...there is a special chemistry within the band now....there is a joy within the band and you hear it in the notes coming from their instruments...you see it in their eyes and facial expressions as they are playing....you see it when they close their eyes and you know that the music is taking them to that special place....yes, this is a very special Allman Brothers Band!!!....thank you again for such beautiful, special music that once again touches my soul like no other band can....
A friend of mine/ours from the Allman listserv posted this in response to Hophead's Warren interview. Thought y'all might enjoy it. Just one more day and I'll be standing in the front row, grooving to two of the best guitarists on the planet!
Peace,
CeeCee
----------------------------------------------
He said, "I hope no
one ever thinks of me as a rent-a-guitarist. I've been
with this band for ten years, after all."
TEN years? Jesus, Warren, I've thought of you as a member
since 1988, Pattern Disruptive tour at the Peabody
in Orlando - which gives you a good 13, 14 years anyway.
Frogwings, GA&F, Great Southern, ABB, Mule, DTB... I'm
really colorblind or inclusive or indiscriminate or
whatver the term it is I'm looking for when it
comes to the family of music/ians centered on the ABB.
Warren a rent-a-guitarist? Sure, like I might rent
the Taj Mahal for a reception hall some day.
Who-sum-ever gets Warren to sit in with them has
got to consider themselve one fortunate and honored
sonuvagun. I can't not think of a more pre-eminent
musician or ambassador of music than Warren Haynes.
If Bush can't appoint him, then the next Democratic
President ought to - to some some yet-to-be-invented
cabinet-level post... Minister of Peace and Good Times,
Minister of The Groove... ahhh, think up your own
more apropos post for Warren Haynes, Musician Extraordinaire,
loved dearly by his fans.
oh... and:
"
Later, Warren told us that the Grateful Dead were
planning to reunite and tour -- using that name -- and
they asked him to be part of it, but he turned them
down. With the time he wants to devote to the Brothers
and to the Mule he wasn't able to do a month's
rehearsals with them and then their tour. He said that
growing up he was not a Deadhead and that he was much
more into the ABB. In fact, it was only in the last
ten to twelve years or so did he start to listen to
the GD music -- and it was the songwriting that
brought him into it. Once he began listening to Garcia
and Hunter's immense repertoire of songs he really
started to understand the Dead."
Jesu-maria... I can't find words to express how
utterly cool I find this. Cool? No, that doesn't
begin to define my... understanding, agreement,
appreciation.. and oh yah... that little bit about
"time he wants to devote to the Brothers".
Is that a quote? Just an accurate paraphrase?
Holy crap.... do I ever love Warren Haynes.
BTW... one thing I've often been thinking, and it is
no way an 'original' thought... but so overwhelming
in its urgency, I must express it once again:
The ABB have assumed complete and Whole ownership
of Rocking Horse... just in case any of you have
overlooked that fact. Its an entirely different
and fleshier tune with the ABB. Fleshier? Where the
f do I come up with such ineptitudes? It is
a monster MONSTER song by the Allman Brothers Band.
How can you not thrash to that song? It pushes
you like a building breeze on the sea oats.
Unlike a mere Hurricane, though, it rips you out by your
roots and thows you clear across the peninsula into
the next ocean - still viable, still respirating.
Warren, you ARE an Allman Brother.
Attention to the South Fla. Peachheads: Deb, ChrisR., Carol and Kevin, Luke, others. Been watching that storm down there. Hope ya'll don't have to evacuate, but if you gotta' run from that thing, might as well hit the road with good friends and good music. Atlanta Friday,B'ham Sat., Memphis Sun. Seriously, hoping it doesn't come to that. Ya'll keep us posted on how you're doing if it heads your way. Hoping for the best...EAPFP
Hello....I am new to this site but a long-time ABB fan. I (unfortunately and umbelievably) have not been able to catch the band yet this year.............I may have to hold out all the way until the Beacon!!! I will say though as a huge blues fan that I agree with the assesment of Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers....They absolutely smoke!!! I am a harp player myself and have been at it for many years.....I look up to Rod as one of the players to measure everyone else by...and his wife Honey on Piano......I have seen her keep a whole room going crazy even while the rest of the band was not even on the stage....stuff that would make Count Basie roll over in his grave!!! My favorite blues band though.........ABB of course!
Some thoughts on Salem... First off, it was great to meet Ron E. and Kirby W. who set Glenn B. and me up with some choice seats. You cats know how to have a good time! Thank you for your hospitality. Jim & Jen B. are also fine folks, and it was nice to meet and spend time with you both. And Carol.... you are a "peach" of a lady, and moved my night from "great" to "over the top" with your gifts and kindness. My favorite moment of the show was when Derek spotted Carol dancing in the front row, recognized her, and gave her a nod and a smile. And to my traveling compadre Glenn, it was a pleasure as usual. It was also great to briefly meet Christine King and Denise as well!
Salem was a small "hockey rink" but had incredible acoustics. I could hear every instrument distinctly from the get-go and the vocals were not muddy at all. Can't wait to hear a tape of this one! The band's communication is something to behold; not only musical, but personnally. At one point during a solo, Warren almost tripped on his guitar stand and Derek walked over and moved it as Warren continued to wail. Both of them cracked up. I agree that Mountain Jam seemed rushed coming out of the drums/bass, but I imagine they had some kind of curfew. It was around 11:30 at the time. Got home at 2:30 and made it to work for my meeting at 8:00 no worse for wear. I'd do it again today if I had a chance!
Have fun Atlanta and Birmingham! You are in for a real treat.
Scotty can't wait to meet you and everybody else at B-ham. Be there tomorrow at this time. See everybody at Applebees Sat. I really don't care what they play, but if they dipped deep that would be special and nice. Peace y'all!
Okay, kids, The Great One ("legendary" only in his own mind) has officially left the building. Headin' south momentarily for three days of fun and fellowship with Brothers and Sisters one and all.
To take a page out of Joe Roy's book, look for the tall fellow with short red hair, a scraggly beard and glasses. Fashionably big-boned, shall we say.
Looking forward to hearing...whatever! Just so everyone has a good time.
Billy, dare to dream big on those picks, buddy. We got a "Mountain Jam" closer and a "Whipping Post" encore here in The 'Ville last year, so it could happen!
Already at the shows, Corn Dog.
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Southpaw, thanks for the tip on the Derek sampler. Printed out a couple of coupons since I was headed to a show in Lincoln last night. Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers (more on that later). I knew that right next to the venue was an indy record store so I stopped and asked if they had the sampler. Got a real dumbfounded look, sorta like Derek who? So the clerk checks their stock thinking I wanted the full Joyful Noise cd. They didn't have any. Say what? Since I already have the full release, I said I was interested in the free sampler. They checked in this box and that box and came up with five (and yet no full release, amazing, maybe they were sold through already, who knows). I snagged two copies.
So I stroll next door where an old high school friend (that's fairly redundant since a high school friend of mine would have to be old) was waiting. Gave him a copy of the sampler and told him he has got to get the full release.
The club, The Zoo Bar, has been home to top line fabulous blues performers for thirty some years. Piazza did not disappoint. Bar none, I believe him to be the finest harp/harmonica player of the day. First heard him several years ago at the Annual Saturday In The Park festival in Sioux City, Iowa. I'd gone to see the Brothers and Susan T (Piazza & Mrs. Trucks are both on Tone Cool Records) and was treated to the Mighty Flyers. What a bonus! Like the saying, even a blind squirrel stumbles on an acorn every now and then. The Mighty Flyers are multiple winners of the W.C. Handy blues band of the year award, so they're definitely no slouches.
Also found out that Buddy Miles is playing the Zoo in October, four days before I see dTb at a different club in Lincoln, so I may have to road trip for Buddy. Now there would be an interview! Having played with Hendrix, Santana, Bloomfield, recorded with Gregg (the first Wasted Words), had Dickey play on one of his solo albums, having jammed with the original Brothers at the Whiskey A-Go-Go back in the day and having recorded Dreams, DKMW and Midnight Rider, I'd say Buddy definitely has a connection to the ABB.
Any who, The Mighty Flyers were exceptional last night. And, to those still following along, since rigs were set up for the Brothers, Ratdog etc. at that Sioux City festival back in 2000, I can offer a B&P to five for the Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers set that day. One disc show. If interested PM me. Time's a problem so I must limit it to five. If you hear back from me, you're in, if not, then you're not.
Sorry for the lengthy post.
hey gang good morning:cool:
JNB thanks for the insight:bike:, what a cyber high... the part you put in about gregg walking his mother was extremly special ...thanks:dance:
Even though there's not as many of us out here in 'fly-over territory, we still deserve a pre-party, don't we?
Soooooo, here's where I'll be in Memphis on Sunday:
The North End Grill
346 Main
901-527-3663
I plan on getting there in the 3:00 hour. Look for a 'fashionably thin', bearded, red head with his twin that was born 30 years later, and 4 or 5 other people, including the Legendary Great Scott!
Bein' that a cold front is coming thru, The Thong will only be visible for the begging. :naughty:
Only 81 hrs, 32 mins til SHOWTIME! :realhappy:
ABB rocked the Salem Civic Center last night, in a way that hasn't been done since the ABB visited Roanoke in 1975. THEY'RE BACK. The indomitable rhythm section was in their usual good form, Greg hit notes that I haven't heard him hit for years, but the Derek-Warren duo is awesome...brings back shades of the Fillmore - this is the best two guitar duo that I've heard....well, since Duane and Dickey. Best concert that I've seen in years.
Hey Bobby, SevenMoore sounds great, have one of your shows on cd. Nice to hear Paul and Jerry playing together again. Great version of This 'Ol Cowboy that ya'll do. I think that your band would be a good combo with the ABB on a bill. Looking forward to the studio cd from ya'll.
Wayne
Part II.. We have a band called "SevenMoore", in which I play guitar, I'm just praying for the day we can play together on the same bill someday, because it really would be a good combo. Keep the faith, and pass the torch, you are the best... Bobby Gaines
Saw ya'll a little while ago in Charlotte. Thanx for the comps. I've been huge fan and ya'll have been a BIG influence on my "approach" to music. I have to say, Warren and Trucks have never sounded better. Their slide performance was astounding, and the whole band was "smiling" again. That was very heartwarming. Oteil's bass solo was one of the most beautiful thing I've heard in a long time.Part 1
