Big Thanks to the Old Cooter! Red Rocks was rocking the Club Deluxe last night. Also, the Dreams on the DVD, DEREK- Yeeeoooowww!!!

How about those FLORIDA MARLINS !!!!! YAHOOOOOOOOOO
The band calling itself Lynyrd Skynyrd today can still put on a good show; however, they are missing the lyrics of Ronnie Van Zant and the great riffs and solos which were a hallmark of Rossington, Collins, King or Gaines in their recent recorded work. (The ABB as we know is still creating timeless music today as they did in 70 & 71. Not counting the 9 yr break between BWIAB and Hittin'theNote.) This is both sad and ironic in Skynyrd's case seeing as how they have both Ricky Medlocke of Blackfoot and Hughie Thomasson, the resident stud of the Outlaws band, (if you believe his publicity and another topic altogether.) rounding out the triple lead guitar attack of Skynyrd.
As for my boy Carlosofanalretentivecoronado, yes in all probability Freebird was written before Duane died; however, Ronnie dedicated it to Duane's memory in at least 1 of 3 Skynyrd shows I attended so long ago. And the Cardiff Wales show in 75, Ronnie dedicates it to the memory of Brother Duane. Also Ronnie in all likelyhood didn't consiously set out to write his epitaph or have any idea that the song would come to be one of rock musics most enduring anthems, but we know that is what the song has become to so many of us. Peace.
Gregg is not touring this year, working real hard relaxing is the word on the street....
Any word on Gregg & Friends tour dates this Fall/Winter?
Jeanne,
Just reading what you wrote about the Red Rocks cd makes me nostolgic. Can't wait to get my copy (Hint.Hint - Coot)! But I am lucky enough to have the Beacon DVD to keep me busy for now. That thing is awesome!!!! Too many great moments to mention!!!!
Robert Randolph was DEFINITELY on VH1 last night. Tore it up, too.
I don't get the new L.S. song either - the one about being a red neck - I was kind of embarrassed when I heard it.
If someone has handy the booklet from the 3 disc LS boxset, IIRC there is a little blurb in there about Freebird and its origins. It was written before Duane died, and not originally written for him before he died. Later on, all involved would report that to be the case, but the 3 disc set features an early version as well as the full version.
Just because someone claims on a live disc that they wrote [allegedly] a song for one person or another does not however make it true. The booklet from the box set also includes IIRC the recording date of the demo, and it was before 29 Oct 71....my copy is at home, so I can not provide chapter and verse.
CRR
Curis Lowe was always my favorite....
i tell you though, i have heard the newest Skynyrd album and that is not good at all. the ABB still is putting out quality work...so there is a little contrast for ya....
Wow Charlesinator - I too love L.S. and at one point in time I confused them with ABB - especially with One Way Out. It took me a long time to find music that I liked and L.S., along with the Marshall Tucker Band and the Outlaws, were my first favorites. How can you not love Simple Man.
Man, I'm touched by all the posts today. Hell yeah Rob Skynyrd wrote Freebird for Duane. Ronnie says so on a live show that I have. I have always played a game comparing Skynyrd (the original band) to the ABB.
There are so many similarities. I don't want to p.o. Macon esp. on the eve of GABBA fest, (I hope all going have a great time. I'd love to see Tim Brooks & Breau Jam.) but the ABB formed and got their start in the official home of Southern Rock-n-Roll Jacksonville, FLA.
Skynyrd actually moved into the house vacated by the ABB. I think Reddog even stated in his Book Of Tales Ronnie's wife Judy dated Gregg. Although there were alot of similarities, Skynyrd went on to forge their own unique place in rock history. THERE IS NO ROCK-N-ROLL HALL OF FAME WITHOUT LYNYRD SKYNYRD!!! Some clowns in Cleveland or the "music biz" don't feel they should honor a band that flies the Stars And Bars what a load of BS. Rolling Stone rock critics and people who pigeon hole Skynyrd (and the ABB) as just a beer-drinking, hell-raising Southern boogie band do a disservice to one of rocks greatest singer/songwriter/frontmen ever(Has anybody ever heard another song about gun control rock as hard as Saturday Night Special?) and their legion of fans both north and south of the border. Some people may think of Freebird as simplistic, but that's the beauty of it.
"If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?"
Yes I remember you Ronnie, and Steve, Cassie, Leon, Duane, Berry, Lamar, Woody, Joe Dan, Toy, Tommy, Billy and all the others who touched my life with your music.....my music......our music! God bless y'all and everybody here on the GB today. When I kick the bucket, whether it be tomorrow or the next day, I hope a few people will remember me in a good way. That's all we can ask for in this world. Peace.
still love & listen to the Outlaws 1st album..and on vinyl no less as i do not have it on cd...
Jodi.. was at the same show at Roosevelt ..left during Rod Stewart..
had too many cohorts who couldn;t stand anymore... imagine that?
Jeanne..was i singin?.. i was just so lost in the music at that point..
just watched the DVD last night for the first time too..
Derek just blows me away..
Atlanta has not made it to New Mexico yet, ponies must be tired....or the mail man thinks we are a foreign country down here!
Some awful kind bruddas and sisatas here, thanks to all who made kind offers of late.
Jeanne, been going to Red Rocks since 78 and you can't help but be in awe when there, if your not you better check your pulse cause you are probably dead.
Good morning brothers and sisters.
I found cooties in my mailbox last night, and I couldn't be happier!! *smile*
Many thanks to you, Steve, for sending the Red Rocks show. I tell ya...I love it from the minute Derek walks out on stage and "tinkers" before the rest of the boys join him for the One Way Out opener! That Wasted Words surprised me again even though I knew it was coming. Desi starts off so beautifully and just grows and grows and explodes before returning us softly back to Earth. I can still hear Stormy, loud and clear, singing along with it. He sings with his whole heart. *smile*
I can still feel Old Coot leaning over and asking me if life could possibly be any better than that particular moment in time. Nope. Could there be anything else going on anywhere in the universe? Didn't care. I was at one with my universe. *chuckle*
It's nice to see that even though it wasn't his first time at Red Rocks, he was still as awestruck with the place as a first timer like myself. Magical, indeed.
Linnie - what about the MULE - 2 days to go, and Robert Randolph, to name a few.
Just checked my TV listings and couldn't find any mention of Robert Randolph being aired today. 🙁
But if you aren't watching your favorite baseball team tonight, some channel called CMTV (Country Music Television maybe?) is showing Freebird the movie at 9:00 PM eastern time. If you like Skynyrd, you'll probably enjoy this movie. Lots of good vintage footage of the band.
i agree with NED...the only live band i've seen that i've enjoyed more than Skynyrd has been the ABB! :bounce:
(and i saw them just 4 years ago)....
:pmusic: :pmusic: :pmusic: :pmusic:
