Man, I'm touched by all the posts today. Hell yeah Rob Skynyrd wrote Freebird for Duane. Ronnie says so on a live show that I have. I have always played a game comparing Skynyrd (the original band) to the ABB.
There are so many similarities. I don't want to p.o. Macon esp. on the eve of GABBA fest, (I hope all going have a great time. I'd love to see Tim Brooks & Breau Jam.) but the ABB formed and got their start in the official home of Southern Rock-n-Roll Jacksonville, FLA.
Skynyrd actually moved into the house vacated by the ABB. I think Reddog even stated in his Book Of Tales Ronnie's wife Judy dated Gregg. Although there were alot of similarities, Skynyrd went on to forge their own unique place in rock history. THERE IS NO ROCK-N-ROLL HALL OF FAME WITHOUT LYNYRD SKYNYRD!!! Some clowns in Cleveland or the "music biz" don't feel they should honor a band that flies the Stars And Bars what a load of BS. Rolling Stone rock critics and people who pigeon hole Skynyrd (and the ABB) as just a beer-drinking, hell-raising Southern boogie band do a disservice to one of rocks greatest singer/songwriter/frontmen ever(Has anybody ever heard another song about gun control rock as hard as Saturday Night Special?) and their legion of fans both north and south of the border. Some people may think of Freebird as simplistic, but that's the beauty of it.
"If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?"
Yes I remember you Ronnie, and Steve, Cassie, Leon, Duane, Berry, Lamar, Woody, Joe Dan, Toy, Tommy, Billy and all the others who touched my life with your music.....my music......our music! God bless y'all and everybody here on the GB today. When I kick the bucket, whether it be tomorrow or the next day, I hope a few people will remember me in a good way. That's all we can ask for in this world. Peace.
