Alexis, have a great 8th birthday. I loved being 8.
Ray sure had heart. One of the very best ever. Thanks for the music.
I just heard about Ray on ABC News. Not ashamed to say, hearing him sing "America" this evening brought some real tears. Such a great man lost. Rest in Peace, Ray.

I can't stop lovin' you . . . R.I.P. Ray.
Great respect for a great man on here. I wish that his own official site were as quick in updating the news
Completely bummed to hear about the passing of Ray Charles. I remember hearing his music as a young child in the late '50's (thanks to an older cousin of mine) and realizing then he was the real deal. He pretty much invented 'soul" in music and almost all the singers I like from Gregg Allman, Van Morrison on down owe that man a big debt of graditude. Rest in Peace Brother Ray and Thank You for all the music you gave us.
RIP Ray Charles:angel:

Hophead, got it right. You did leave out that the toilet place was right at the bottom of the steps. Some great days and gigs at that place. We did play on a trailer once or twice. I think that was about two or three hundred yards from the steps. Once was with Boz and some of his band.
Of course the bands from Atlanta were there. All for free. As Brother Berry said, give something back to the people. Not to mention, we were broke, and had no gigs. It was something to do, and a place to go spread the religion, Brother Duane said, we were spreading.
We shall reframe from saying the ladies were fine, and liked what we were doing. That's on and off the stage. That was the icing on the cake. Plus we had access to some great free drugs. Sorry, it was a big part of that time period. As all us old hippies know. So going to Atlanta was a big party for us and we had the pleasure of being the party. Blew Atlanta Ga. away.
First gig about five hundred people were there. Second gig the next week there were about five thousand. The people were proud. This was a Ga. based band and Ga. was getting ready to go wide open. To the people of the world. The hippies of Ga. said, this is our representatives, in this world wide movement of music, and Brother Duane said, if you did not come to play sit down. That meant we are going places, and if you can't keep up, don't waste our time. A new sound was born, but today the head preacher of the world is gone. Music never hurt anyone. MAY THE SPIRITS BE YOU BROTHER RAY, YOU WERE THE KING OF THE WORLD. THE LEAD PREACHER.
Rest in peace Ray. "I'm busted"
Rest in peace, Ray Charles.
Another great ambassador of Southern music.
Another talent that the great Jerry Wexler was able to recognize.
I've Got News For You off Searching for Simplicity, Rick T is another one. Man sure hate Uncle Ray's passing. DB&GS put on an incredbile show last night in Charlotte. Check my review over on Dickey's site if so inclined.

Isn't "Outskirts of Town" a RC song, even if he didn't write it?
Cheers

Greg and Ray Charles were on the same bill with the Benson and Hedges Blues Festival around 88 or 89. They played the Fox Theater in Atlanta the second night. I still regret not going. I did attend the first night, and saw BB King, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, and Johnny Winter. I think the Fabulous Thunderbirds played the next night with Greg and Ray.
I posted here once with a wish that Gregg and Ray Charles could have done one together....
Gregg did one of Ray's tunes...The Brightest Smile in Town....cant think right off of any other tunes he did.
Ray Charles was one special cat and he WILL be missed.
God Bless Ray Charles.

R.I.P. Brother Ray Charles -- I never get tired of listening to his music.
Zambi, the ABB played in neither location you mentioned in Piedmont Park. Mostly they played on the stone steps below the baseball fields. I think GABBA may be working on getting a commemorative plaque for this location.
The last time they ever played Piedmont Park, however, they set up in the nearby gazebo and no one could see them except for the row of hippies perched on the railing around the edge. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them -- all I could see was the backs of the lucky few surrounding the band. I could hear them perfectly, though ...
Georgia is thinking of Ray Charles..."just an old sweet song...".
Thank you, sir, for the music you gave us.
