"How then, can anyone in one breadth honor daddy for their military service, yet howl at the moon and say their war or the conflict they served in was bad or stupid or wrong? That slaps directly in the face of that veteran's service, for as he/she was or is an extension of the US Government and its Commander-In-Chief, so does he/she share in its outcomes for the mission they participated in. " Well Rick, if you want to along with the line of thinking how about if you're a Bush loving Republican and think what we're trying to do in Iraq is a just and noble cause, and you would do anything to "Support the Troops", why do so many of you are so adamantly opposed to re-instituring the military draft? Seems to me that if 19/20 year old sons are to go off to war and fight and die for this cause, it would be much more fair if large portions of these sons came from the ones who support this adventure in the first place. You know I really think the only reason the Bush/Rumsfelt didn't take General Shinseki advice on the number of troops needed for the occupation of Iraq is that it would have probably required the re-institution of the draft to fulfill. Also, if you think all the people in and around the military are in agreement with Bush and Rumsfelt, perhaps you might want to take a visit over to the Whipping Post and read a topic titled "The Generals Speak"? Might surprise you what some former high ranking military officers think and say.

Theoretically one of our freedoms the troops in Iraq are fighting for to maintain is our right to free speech. Free speech encompasses the right to say something that may appear hypocritical to others or the right to say something ugly for no other reason than we just aren't nice people. The American Heritage Dictionary lists as one of the definitions of the word liberal as: Having, expressing, or following views or policies that favor the freedom of individuals to act or express themselves in a manner of their own choosing. It would appear some of our "conservative" buddies have some liberal tendencies. Peace and my apologies for biting. God bless you all. ------------------------------------------------- "I can't say that I've ever been lost, but I was bewildered once for three days." - Daniel Boone

Rick, re your WARNING TO LIBERAL post and as a veteran I must tell you, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. I'm guessing you were NEVER a veteran, and as so I would appreciate it greatly if you (& others like you) wouldn't make broad judgement and ASSumptions about us. About the only true assumption you can make about most veterans is, that we all love America, but that doesn't necessarly mean that we buy into the policies of the administration while we're in uniform. To give you an example how wrong your thinking is, I was trained to be a Field Corpman, basically what that mean in combat situation I would be attached to a Marine unit in the field providing initial medical care. Now I'm a Vietnam era veteran, and I was against the Vietnam War as were many other veterans, but if I was given the orders to go over there, I would have went. Not because I believed in the war but simply because I had a duty and obligation and the training to provide medical care to Marines.

tony... love that album too... one of Dylan's best to my ears.. and another one of Dylan's tune's from "times are a changin.." Oh all the money that in my whole life I did spend, Be it mine right or wrongfully, I let it slip gladly past the hands of my friends To tie up the time most forcefully. But the bottles are done; We've killed each one and the table's full and overflowed. And the corner sign says it's closing time, So I'll bid farewell and be down the road. Oh every girl that ever I've touched, I did not do it harmfully. And every girl that ever I've hurt, I did not do it knowingly. But to remain as friends and make amends you need the time and stay behind. And since my feet are now fast and point away from the past, I'll bid farewell and be down the line. Oh every foe that ever I faced, The cause was there before we came. And every cause that ever I fought, I fought it full without regret or shame. But the dark does die as the curtain is drawn and somebody's eyes must meet the dawn. And if I see the day I'd only have to stay, so I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone. Oh, every thought that's strung a knot in my mind, I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung. But it's not to stand naked under unknowing' eyes, It's for myself and my friends my stories are sung. But the time ain't tall, yet on time you depend and no word is possessed by no special friend. And though the line is cut, it ain't quite the end, I'll just bid farewell till we meet again. Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time to disgrace, distract, and bother me. And the dirt of gossip blows into my face, and the dust of rumors covers me. But if the arrow is straight and the point is slick, it can pierce through dust no matter how thick. So I'll make my stand and remain as I am and bid farewell and not give a damn.

Rick, I read your post and gave it some thought. Here is my response. No venom here, just my respectful disagreement. I would consider myself to be a liberal, although that label is open for interpretation. I'm definitely a Democrat. I'm also a veteran. I was one of the lucky ones...I slipped in just under the wire before the minimum enlistment went from two years to four years. I left home two weeks after high school graduation and spent my entire hitch in what was then West Germany between 1983 and 1985. My unit was the 2nd/75th Field Artillery, and we were, in the grand scheme of things, on the "front lines." We spent about half of our time running around in the woods playing soldier. If the sh*t had ever hit the fan, my guess is that my unit would have been one of the first to be deployed. Fortunately for me (and for the rest of the world, I suppose), that didn't happen. I did my time, received an honorable discharge, and came home to go to college. For what it is worth, I received the highest rank and every medal and ribbon that one could receive for a two year enlistment, short of seeing combat. All of my evaluations were above average. In short, I was a "good soldier." I can honestly say that I didn't think a whole lot about causes while I was in the service. I was there to do a job, and my principle job, as was the principle job of those around me, from the battalion commander on down, was to FOLLOW ORDERS. Right behind that was not asking a lot of questions. Maybe I was unique, but I don't think so. I met a lot of different young men from all over the country. Some were like me, just doing their time and heading back to the States. Some were in it for the long haul. Some had wives and children, some didn't. There was every race, religion, ethnic background and socio-economic demographic represented. But the one constant that I saw, at least in my little piece of the armed forces, was that the best way to get by was to just do what you were told. The reasons behind the orders you were given weren't important, 'cause you still had to follow them! Again, maybe my way of thinking was unique. Maybe things would have totally changed had I seen combat. But from where I was standing, there wasn't a whole lot of thought about causes. We didn't rise at the crack of dawn to do pushups and run in the rain or spend a week at a time in the field enduring bitter cold so that could spread democracy around the world. We did it because we made a choice to enlist, and because it was our job. I haven't been one of the ones that has been airing a lot of my political beliefs here on the Guest Book before and after the election. We have a forum for that, not to mention the fact that I am on a couple of listservs that revolve entirely around politics. But I'll go ahead and say that I voted for John Kerry, and while I have nothing against President Bush personally, I don't exactly like the way he has run the country, and in particular I have been opposed to the war in Iraq from the get go. I accept that President Bush will be in office for four more years, but that doesn't change the fact that I have never been more proud to call myself a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT than I am right here and now. So yes, Rick, you can bet your a s s that I support our troops! I also feel I have every right to thank our veterans for their service. My late grandfather was a World War II veteran who saw plenty of combat, and guess what? He was a liberal Democrat, too! I said a little prayer for him today. Would you take that away from me? From him? You seem to delight in being controversial in your posts, even to the point of forewarning us when one of your patented doozies is coming. I respect your right to your opinion and your freedom to voice it here, but speaking only for myself, I feel that you've completely missed the boat on this one. EAPFP .
