Pink Floyd Founder Dies LONDON (AP) -- Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60. The spokeswoman - who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement - confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many years. Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album ``The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'' - largely written by Barrett, who also played guitar - was a commercial and critical hit. However, Barrett suffered from mental instability, exacerbated by his use of LSD. His behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968 - five years before the release of Pink Floyd's most popular album, ``Dark Side of the Moon.'' He was replaced by David Gilmour. Barrett released two solo albums - ``The Madcap Laughs'' and ``Barrett'' - but soon withdrew from the music business altogether. He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England, where he was a familiar figure, often seen cycling or walking to the corner store. Despite his brief career, Barrett's fragile, wistful songs influenced many musicians, from David Bowie - who covered the Barrett track ``See Emily Play'' - to the other members of Pink Floyd, who recorded the album ``Wish You Were Here'' as a tribute to their troubled bandmate. The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral would be held.

Had a nasty commute yesterday but could feel the weight lifting off me when I pulled in the driveway and I spotted "the yellow envelope" at my front door. I knew I was in for a night of dTb therapy. After the usual settling in and fingering through the mail (and watching David Wright hit a few homeruns!) I started the Songlines DVD. MmmmMmmmm....I tell you the day just slipped behind me as the Joyful Noise groove made my tired feet feel light as a feather. There was much dancing--in the living room, down the hall, down the stairs to switch the laundry-- It's impossible to sit still when the dTb are telling their story. No critical review, here. I let it run straight through and enjoyed every minute of it. I didn't look for faults; though, I don't know that I'd find any if I were inclined to do such a thing. Mostly, I let the music flow through the house along with all of the dTb memories over the years. I was happy knowing that friends were in the audience that night and felt like I was grooving right alongside them. Who knew y'all would fit in my little living room?! I felt very fortunate to have yet another way to experience this music that touches me deeply. I thought the picture was 'clear as a bell' :winky: and the sound was incredibly crisp. Broken strings and all, Derek finds his way and takes us along for the ride. A true artist is he. Mike's vocals were sticky sweet--and that's a very good thing! Lots of "Rico Faces" to make me grin in amazement at this man in constant motion. Kofi was particulary fresh adding both swampy keys and delicate flute. Todd was his usual steady. I think he oozes joy sandwiched between Derek and Kofi when they start feeding off each other. I don't think he could stop that smile from taking over if he wanted to. Which begs the question, why would anyone want to bottle up such joy? Let it out! The Count, at first, seems superfluous, but the more you listen, the more you hear him and how he complements the others. Okay, so maybe I did make a few observations...*smile* Couldn't help but throw a victorious fist in the air when Derek stated they have many more albums to come in the future to experiment with all sorts of things. Yessssssssssss!!!!!!!! Thanks to all that had a hand in making this DVD and getting it out. Job well done!

Morning all. Since I'm not up to date on this, which Neil are we talking about? Damn, it's a surprise I was never baned from this site - I remember Linnie telling me to "step away from the computer" and Matt offering a simple "DON'T" during the Peachy Awards last year. Took me a few more months to catch on...... Trouble with chat boards and forums, etc. is there's often no time given by someone in crisis to ensure that brain is hooked up to mouth (or keyboard, in this case). We can all learn this - altho much of the time it's the hard way.
