Re: George McConnell:
August 02, 06 -- George McConnell, lead guitarist with the rock band Widespread Panic, has moved on to further adventures.
When co-founding band member “Mikey” Houser passed away four years ago, McConnell, along with saxophonist Randall Bramblett, joined forces with Widespread Panic, and the band played on.
Longtime friend and producer John Keane has been playing both the pedal steel and electric guitar throughout this recent tour, along with guitarist Sam Holt, founder of the band Outformation- who has been sitting in from time to time. The remainder of Widespread Panic’s summer tour will proceed at full steam.
“Bottom line is there’s still songs to be played, music to make, and that’s what’s going to happen,” singer/guitarist John Bell added. “We’ll miss George a lot. I’m very grateful to him for lending us his talent and friendship these past four years, and we wish him all the best.”
bummer for me, but i really wont know the difference.....i will be catching my first WSP shows this weekend (and going on my first, bona-fide road trip) in Md, then two nights is Portsmouth!
:thewave:
oh, and i like what i read on the forum a few years back......when everyone was writing "Clapton is God" they really just made a typo, shoulda been "Clapton is GOOD"
there's nothing wrong with liking what you like. it better to like it without being a hatah...
ol' duane sure ran clapton into the ground back in the day, didn't he? couldn't say anything good about that "English boy".
regionalism is usually a somewhat irrational basis for evaluation.
("i'm a southerner. I'm not proud of it and I'm not ashamed of it"... DA)
let's see, john mayhall, yardbirds, cream, beatles, blind faith, delaney & bonnie, derek and the dominoes, 35 year solo career...
pretty decent CV.
I will be very disappointed if EC & Company does not bring the 'A' game. Fender or Gibson, (I can reference Stevie Ray here as he tore up a fender), he best bring the real deal and play his ass off.....this is
SKYDOG COUNTRY...Both kinds!!!

 Cowboy Neil! Listening to a Garcia, Grisman show. :guitarist:
Fender, Gibson...as long as you make it sound good. 😀
Hope to see you there Randy, and maybe, just maybe, this US Tour will either solidify (or trash) what many in this GB have stood by over the years; EC could not hold Duane's jock strap. I plan to watch the interaction and listen closely during the Birmingham gig.
Above does not infer I like or dislike EC, but I do think Randy nailed it perfectly; this here is Gibson and SG Country, and when the boys from England come down South, they had better bring it on. Otherwise, just another Strat player up there...sorry Bluedad, but you know its all about the tone for me 🙂

What in the world happened between George McConnell and Widespread Panic? He was really starting to shine with the band. Bummer !!!
Well, I got my tix yesterday....he best not bring that lame-assed play-the-same-thing-every-night, take-no-chances stuff into the Deep South. Everybody says the Cream reunion was top-notch, and good for Eric. And if he makes a mistake, or there's an occasional train wreck--hey, that's OK, Bro. Just shows you're willing to take a chance, get on out near the limits of your ability. But this is Duane Allman country--Warren Haynes country--Dickey Betts and Jackie Pearson and Jimmy Herring country. You come down here with your reputation, you better have something, Bro.
Happy vacation, Libby.
And if anybody at this site doesn't subscribe to HTN, well that's kinda' dumb. Best dough you'll spend on anything in print.

aw poor Eric's ego took a hit - maybe he should stop playing his concerts note for note and branch out a little - nothing more boring than the same thing night after night
You can find this in the Forum, but for anyone who doesn't venture into that section of the website, here you go - something I cut out of a review from the Oslo Eric Clapton show....
After Midnight" bridged into "Little Queen Of Spades" and tonight this
one got the royal treatment.Easily the best tune of this night it
stretched out for a loong ride on the magical carpet..trading solos,
adding some tribal bazz..it really rode the heavens. The most magical ,
and the most disappointing moment of the evening came when Derek did
his slide solo right at the end..this time he pushed the envelope, and
Steve Jordan, the drummer sensed what as going on..so he shifted into
an african beat like drumming ..supporting Derek all the way while the
notes flowed seamlessly..it had a special indian raga flavor ..it built
and built and it lasted a long while..this time the "Songline" was
being built in the city of Oslo..After ending his solo Derek got
another standing ovation, but my mistake was probably when I looked
Eric rite then..he was mighty pissed, and the look he shot Derek could
fry a norwegian granite boulder..the maestro was not amused.
The rest of the show was so and so..nothing special, but solid work all
over.
Local radio is playing One Way Out from the Instant Live cd from Walnut Creek!!! I'm smiling now !!!!!!
Was our Del Davis at the Oslo Eric/Derek show??
I fried an egg on the sidewalk in front of the store!
Drag about the Moscow show. I actually approached my wife about going there (she's 100% Russian-American, and a DT fan. Also likes EC). Plus, the show would've been 2 days after our anniversary. Glad I didn't pop for tix to Moscow. Good thing, I guess. I might've done something ignant and ended up in Lubyanka--which would suck.

I just read the horrible story about the incident at the Korn show in Atlanta.
I feel physically ill at this moment.
Surely somebody who was at that show KNOWS WHO THESE SCUMBAGS ARE. Anybody that goes to a show for any reason other than to enjoy music and mix with some other fun-loving folks DESERVES to be turned in, ratted out, finked on - etc.
My condolonces to the poor mother of the young man killed in this incident. According to the story, she is also a recent widow.
I know how it goes - a few ruin the good time for all. I always thought that $7.00 beer at a venue would keep the number of drunken trouble makers to a minimum. Maybe it's time for field sobriety test to be administered to folks as they enter a show. No, that would be extreme.
Here's the deal, though. As civilized people we should look out for one another whenever we assemble in large groups. If you see a$$holes acting violent or beligerant towards others, why not either come to the aid of the offended person EN MASSE or go and get the authorities.
If you want to watch someone get pummled, stay home at watch ultimate fighting on ESPN 2.
Lastly, I do not blame the band, Korn for this incident. It would be very civil and decent of them to contact this young man's mother, though.
I apologize if I sound incoherent or anything. I'm really just upset and sick over this.
