Truly stunning reports from the Scrapomatic gig....I, for one, love seeing these world-class musicians feeling comfortable hanging out with fans. Glad to see Bro. Tinsley Ellis in the mix too. A true class act and quality gentleman. Stuff like this makes it worth getting up every morning...you never know what's around the next bend in the road.

Hey there sweet family,
I'm truly amazed at the efficiency of the Peach-O-Grams. Posted a link to Lane Four's band photo in the one we sent out this morning. So far, it has 900 hits - 189 in the last hour. I love it! 🙂 Spread the word! Rock the vote! :spinner:
Take care and know that *you* are loved,
Lana
Not much to add to the wonderful reviews of last night's incredible show with Scrapomatic. It was such a warm, loving family feeling in the room. Everyone knew each other and the musicians in the crowd felt very comfortable amoungst the family. Doyle was very nice and easy to talk with. He really enjoys Derek being in the band. It was one of those magic nights in Hot'lanta!

Just a few quick points to add to Ron and Tim's description of a very special evening...
--The other guitar player's name was Dave Yoke (sp?). He played a solo right after Derek and didn't suffer from the comparison, which means he must be pretty good. He was also one of the people playing foosball with Derek and Doyle, who have a bright career on the Pro Foosball Tour if they ever get tired of music 😉
--Mike called Paul's National Steel a "metal ukulele" and I thought that was pretty funny 🙂
--I had a good conversation with Doyle about the triple-slide attack on "Motherless Children" at the Clapton show. He said it felt like it was on the very edge of chaos every night, a lot of harmonics going on with three slides at once.
--Last but not least, Mike Mattison really has an incredible voice. Seeing him in a small room like that with such good acoustics, you could really hear every subtle nuance, every breath, and he was right on it all night. Paul Olsen also impressed me with his tasteful guitar and just-right backing vocals. I love the raw, rootsy sound of Scrapomatic!
Hey there sweet family,
From a review of Sunday's Eric Clapton concert at the RBC Center in Raleigh that appeared in the News & Observer yesterday:
"Clapton is at his best when he is not being pious toward the blues, and even though "Little Queen of Spades" was indeed the work of Johnson, the trio of guitarists seemed most concerned with seeing who could unleash the most jaw-dropping solo, with Trucks unofficially prevailing."

Oh yeah, Susan & Derek performed on "It Hurts Me Too." Derek was playing an old acoustic (slide) and but it almost sounded electric. He can get "that sound" regardless of what axe you hand him. The other guitarist who sat in with Scrapomatic was also talented....he looked very familiar but I could not place him.
Back from Scrapomatic at Smith's........guests on stage included Derek & Susan T. Non-performing spectators included Doyle Bramhall, Bruce Hampton, Yonrico Scott, Tinsley Ellis, & folks from Landslide Records (Scrapomatic label). Scrapomatic were realllly good. Their harmony vocals were superb and Mike was in top form. They have an honest and very clever take on the blues and manage to be high energy even in the duo format. Their new album is a keeper. Paul Olsen told me afterward they would not be a part of the dTB/Susan T festivities on NYE unfortunately (Mike will be singing with dTb of course).
When Susan & Derek went on stage to sing/play with Mike & Paul (and a third guitarist, name?), I saw an empty set of tables on the riser in the back. I sat down next to our own Patrick Crenshaw who had just grabbed a seat. Turns out, we were in the tables/seat section w/Derek, Susan, Doyle, Yonrico, & Ron C and one of Derek's friends.
Susan was having a great time when she came off stage (yes, Nancy SS she was seated right by me, but I didn't bother her!), and was totally into clapping along with Mike Mattison, when she wasn't making Doyle laugh. Susan took a big drink order for her group when she went to the bar, and Pat kept joking about how long it was taking "that waitress" to return. After the Scrapomatic set, it was a big group of the musicians all talking with Joe Bell and Marty Wall (dTb soundman) and others. Pat & I basically stayed out of the way.
I did get to see Derek introduce Doyle to Paul Olsen right in front of me. Col Bruce got introduced to Doyle by Rob Johnson. Reallllllllll cool all around. Since Doyle was sitting right next to us and few folks weren't really talking to him, Pat C & I casually talked to him for about 10 minutes. We kept it low key but I asked him about his tours with Roger Waters and the Arc Angels album. He was very laid back and totally cool (after about 5 minutes, he turned and formally introduced himself again since he forgot my name). He said "If I lived in Atlanta, I definitely being playing this room." I also asked Doyle if he had heard how Derek & Mike met and he vaguely knew it was on a subway. So, I was able to give him the full story and tell him also a bit about Javier Colon (the former also talented dTb singer).
Paul Olsen came back & sat down next to me before they left early in the Drew Emmitt set. He was also very nice & wanted to know when I had first heard of Scrapomatic.
Anyway, Scrapomatic did about 1 hour, followed by Drew Emmitt, who has a very good band. They'll be playing at Mag Fest for those of you headed to Suwanee. A nice mix of blue grass, country and hard rocking jams. Drew played fiddle, mandolin, slide mandolin, and about 3 electric guitars. He had a talented rhythm and lead player with him who could also do some great harmony vocals (think SCI with more meat & potatoes instead of rice & veggies). I'll definitely see them again. Unfortunately, I had to leave, but not until they played a very nice rendition of Sailing Shoes. Drew & band had nice collection of dedicated fans tearing up the dance floor.
Thanks to Joe Bell for the tip on tonight. I know this is a geeky, semi-obsessed music fan post, but I swear I'm under control!! Glad I ventured out on a Monday.
Tim
[Edited since I had Marty & Joe mixed up from the dTb crew]
Big (((((HUGS))))) and thank yous to everyone for the birthday wishes!
Nice post Hophead. Thanks!
Thanks for the reports Hophead and Patrick. Sounds like a good time was had by all. Wish I could have been there.

Take care and know that you are loved,
Lana
hotlanta tim was also on hand for the festivities and he chatted with doyle...at least tim knew a good bit about doyle's career, all I knew is he's left handed. Drew Emmitt closed the show, a very talented guy--I don't think I have ever seen anybody play slide mandolin, but Drew pulled it off--a great night of music, many thanks to JNB for the tip!
Brother JNB wasn't kidding about special guests tonight at Scrapomatic -- I got there a few minutes late and the first empty chair I could find in the audience was next to Doyle Bramhall! It was the first time I'd met this outstanding guitarist and I had a great time chatting with him about playing with Eric. He told me that the Saturday night show in Atlanta was one of the best on the entire tour and he had a lot of nice things to say about the Atlanta crowd. I told him that he and Derek were sure keeping the old man on his toes, but Doyle shook his head and said, "It's not me -- it's all Derek!"
Susan was sitting next to Doyle and gave me a big hug. I first met her in 1999 in Texas as she and Derek were falling in love and she is one of my favorite performers. It was great to hang with her in a social setting -- she even bought me a beer! What a sweetheart. Derek was sitting next over but I didn't get a chance to talk to him till later. Also in the audience were Yonrico Scott, Col. Bruce Hampton, Tinsley Ellis, and Michael Rothschild (President of Landslide Records), as well as PatrickCrenshaw, jamgram, JNB, RobJohnson, and BarbPotter of the Guest Book. It was like old home night for me -- I lost track of the number of hugs!
Susan and Derek sat in with Scrapomatic in a rousing version of Feel So Bad and I got busy snapping away for some photos that I'll post soon. There was a taper buddy of mine in the audience, so I hope this fine show gets into circulation quickly.
After the show I ran into Derek and Susan downstairs at Smith's -- Derek and Doyle were locked into an intense Foosball battle with a couple of members of their party. Susan was chatting with the Colonel so I joined in. She said she's playing Madison Square Garden next month at a Knicks game, although I never did get clear whether it's a whole show or just the national anthem. She said that she and Derek had been headed out Friday night to see Duane play drums with the Colonel, but kids started acting up and they had to stay behind. Today, however, she and Derek and kids took Eric and his family to the Atlanta Aquarium. She said that Eric was not used to standing in line and was somewhat put out by the large crowd at the aquarium. Only a few folks recognized him, but he did not sign any autographs. Afterwards they went across the street to the Children's Museum where the kids really let loose -- Susan says Eric is a great dad. Col. Bruce also mentioned that the Atlanta Aquarium contacted him about an ARU show for their grand opening last year, but he wasn't able to pull it together because of tour obligations. Wouldn't that have been cool?
I told Mike Mattison that I hope I see Scrapomatic a lot more often now that he lives in Atlanta -- Tinsley overheard and the two began talking about Mike opening for Tinsley at his Macon gig in two weeks. Don't know if it will work out, but it's nice to see these two great musicians making a connection.
It was a great evening -- a transcendental show. I'm so glad I was able to be there and to see so many of my friends.
Good morning all!

Hello Ms. Banes & Co.....
Wild and wooly nite here in the Buckeye state......rainin' real hard...has been all day. As mentioned earlier, computer problems.....can't get on Anythng Goes....can get on everything else.....so weird. Other things wacky too...gonna try and go 'shopping' tomorrow nite. Otherwise, all well up this way....my cousin's funeral Saturday was HOPEFULLY the last round. Sad, but she's in a better place as they say... a stroke a couple of years ago.....did a lot of damage. Starting to 'reminisce' finally about the GABBA 'experience'.....so much fun. Yes, Miss Terry got me my T-shirt!!! haha!!! Sorta tickled me to see her meandering thru the Atlanta Airport searching for some idiot from Ohio! Haha!
Thanks to you and Brian for babysitting me and Joe this year! Photo's look good.....will peruse when a new computer allows me more flexibilty. Where's CAL when I need him???!!!
Later.....BRO-D
