Ya see, Eddie, the topic IS a DEEP one actually....
Duane could have simply wanted to fatten a sound, or had some great big picture in mind.
One thing is for certain, or in my mind anyways. That is the ABB duo of Butchie and JJ has really never been fully appreciated by many. Their brilliance come from the dynamic they created, and to their credit, those two drummers CHOSE, early on, NOT to sound like one drummer....ala The Doobie Brothers.
My own silly little opinion is Duane saw something in JJ that was different. He had Butch playing straight ahead and needed the jazz component. And the blues component also. He got that with JJ.
Stormy Monday is perhaps the best early example of the blues component, I would reserve judgement on the jazz component because there are bits and pieces of excellent jazz drumming within non-jazz arrangements, as in Revival.
