Hey now Rick -
I've been on the road to Raleigh and back since I originally posted and haven't been able to respond. As Zambi first mentioned, the firing of Sheriff King, metro Atlanta's first Hispanic sheriff, was just small town petty politics.
The action was taken by the Doraville City Council in a closed session at 2:30 AM. While it seems highly irregular, it was simply a case of politics as usual in the little town of Doraville.
City Councilman Tom Hart says, "I had gone two days without any sleep. It [the firing] has nothing to do with the military stuff."
Hart said he thought King, who recently went on his honeymoon and took an FBI training class, was taking too much time off from work since returning from Iraq. Hart said King "constantly lied" but wouldn't provide specifics.
"I know a lot of people are all kissy kissy about the chief, but there are things going on here if you lift the covers," said Hart.
If you search the AJC Web site you should be able to find the entire article.
BTW, I'd like to wish the happiest of birthdays to Sister Karen! It was a thrill to see you at Raleigh, and William thanks you from the bottom of his heart for the gift you gave him.
What a show in Raleigh -- it filled my heart with joy!
Mike Callahan will remain in my thoughts and prayers ...
