The Sixteenth Annual Southern Revival was held on Sunday June 3, 2007 at Mike ‘n Angelo’s in Buckhead, Atlanta. This gathering of Allman Brothers & music fans was once again a wonderful, laid back afternoon of seeing old friends and hearing the music we love to hear. Donald Jackson has organized this event for the past 16 years and while I have not attended all of them I have attended at least 6 of these events and always totally enjoy myself. Donald prints up T-shirts for each event and several people have T-shirts from all of the Southern Revivals. This year’s event included several great bands and of course ended with the totally wonderful jam that included so many talented musicians both young and old. This year’s event was also special because it was a benefit for the Bill Ector Medical Fund. Bill had always been there for many ABB fans and family and when he suffered an aneurism last year we were all thankful that he recovered. Bill was there, healthy and smiling and playing up a storm with several of the bands and of course the jam. So many people came through to make this a successful benefit by donating items that were auctioned or raffled off and proceeds from the sale of T-shirts were also donated. We made well over a thousand dollars and we could not have done this without all the help from the wonderful ABB family. Special thanks to Joe Bell and Hittin’ the Note for donating some really special items for the auction. Also thanks to Syd Atkinson, this talented artist donated several items including a beautiful floating glass framed piece with a collage of pictures of the ABB from Wanee Fest. Thanks to Greg Potter and the Big House Foundation for some special raffle items. Thanks to Rick Garner and the guy who donated the Vox Amp (sorry I did not get his name). And thanks to all the participants who bid on the items, especially Jimmy and Mary McCord. Now for the bands and the musicians: First of all none of this would be happening without Greg Henderson orchestrating all the music. Without a doubt he worked the hardest on this event and had several key people, including Avery Stone and Danny Wheeler, helping him to set everything up and make sure all the bands had what they needed and sounded great. Thank you Greg, we could not have done it without you. Also thanks to Terry Reeves for helping out with the bands and making onstage announcements and singing too! It would not have been such a successful event without her and she was at the very first one too, when she was 12! We got started with music @ 3pm and the first band was Funk Factory (I think) and they laid down some groovy ABB tunes for our listening pleasure. The next band up was Shady Grove who played at last year’s Revival when they were all in high school together. They all went their separate ways to various colleges and they are back together after their first year in college and are sounding better than ever. These young musicians give us hope that the music we love will never die for they will continue it for us. They also invited Tony Tyler up to play with them and that was great. Next up was Greg Henderson’s band Scantless with David Hicks, Danny Wheeler, and Tim Moore. They regaled us with some great ABB tunes plus some tasty Rock n’ Roll and a little bit of Country too. It was a great set and Greg and the band were in fine form. http://www.myspace.com/thescantlessband Next up was the band Powerline and these rockers who just moved here from California were great. Word is that members of this band lived and played in the clubs in Atlanta under the name Orpheum Rising in the seventies. Powerline is Nicky Ford on lead guitar and vocals, Mel Tribble on bass guitar and lead/backing vocals and Danny Halperin on drums and lead/backing vocals. They are back in Atlanta and will be playing Mike ‘n Angelo’s on June 9 so go see them if you can. http://www.myspace.com/nickymeldanny After all that great music, we announced the silent auction winners and held the raffle for the great donations we received for the Bill Ector Medical Fund. Next up was the JAM! And what a Jam is was, at one point there were 10 people on the stage. All the members of Scantless & Powerline played and Mike Farlow played spectacular slide guiter all night long, thanks Mike. Also playing guitar was Wendell Cox who plays with Travis Tritt, thanks, Wendell for making the jam so much fun, we love you. Special thanks to Tony Tyler, Stephen Hendrix, Stan Killingsworth and Michael Hurwitz from The Tony Tyler Trance for participating in the Jam, they really made the jam extra special. Thanks to Rick Garner and Scott Gressler for laying down some cool harmonica sounds for the jam. And of course thanks to the man of the hour, Mr. Bill Ector for laying down some great guitar and for the special keyboard and vocal with Ms Reeves for a moving “Please Call Home” which ended the night @ 10pm. What a great time, can’t wait for next year.
