Sad to hear about Topper Price's passing. When Topper was on-which was most nights I saw him he was electric. My favorite memory of Topper was at an open jam of the Magic City Blues Society. I don't remember the drummer or keyboard player, but the late Bobby Humphrey was playing bass-probably about 3 months before he drowned, and I was playing guitar. We were getting ready to cruise through Statesboro when someone behind me said, "Can I blow on this one?" Who was I to tell Topper Price no? Well Bobby had the bass popping and Topper-well he blew the hell out of that harp. He and I swapped verses (he insisted) on the vocal. The good ones die young..... Topper also spent a lot of nights sitting in with a jazz/R&B band called Network who had a drummer who looked like Doogie Howser-some guy named Chris Fryar-who many here know and love. They took Topper out of his comfort zone and goodness was it fine. Finally, that band of his in the mid '90's when Tim Boykin was playing guitar...well that was as good a local blues band as there was in the country. I'd love to be on the other side tonight listening to Topper and Little Walter facing off behind Muddy.
