Hey everybody,
Just wanted to say a few words about the Beale St. Music Fest here in Memphis.
Friday afternoon, there was a huge but quick moving crowd coming into in the park. It was a nice way for the festival to get kicked of with DTB being the first band on the south stage. The line up was DTB, Mule, Jerry Lee Lewis, and ABB. Not bad at all!
You could see Susan T. on the side of the stage and various members of the band hanging around. Everybody in the crowd was hoping she would come out for one, but it didn't happen. It was good to see her back there bobbing her head though. Lord knows nobody in the band was doing much movin'! ha ha.... The only song I hadn't heard them play before was the Taj Mahal song "Never seen no whiskey". Just some good laid back music for the afternoon.
There were some scuffles during the Killer's set. He walked off stage a few times during the show and scolded the crowd some. He played a slow country tune called "You win again" to mellow the crowd out before "Great Balls of Fire" & "whole lotta shakin". What can you say but rock n roll!
The Mule did some beatles in their set. Don't remember specifics as I've seen them quite a bit and was yapping with some friends. There was a couple from California by us that didn't care too much for the big crowd and the fact that you can only rent chairs, no bringing them in. That is a complete b.s. rule I must say. The couple said they wouldn't be back. I can't say I blame them at all.
The ABB's set was really good. I'd never gotten to hear the "Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" so that was awesome. I wondered how many of the crowd thought that the ABB wrote that one. I've never heard them stretch Revival out for a long guitar solo before. Got to hear the Other One tease at the end of Black hearted Woman.
I wouldn't have known about that were it not for lurking here!
Another new thing I noticed was the jam they did at the end of "Nobody left to run with". They did a minor harmony guitar hook after the "bo didley" part and then threw in some new chord changes to stretch it out a little. Very nice. They encored with Melissa, One way out, and Whippin Post.
A funny thing that happened was when a 20 something guy to my right was smoking a pipe and these two guys in front of him threatened to beat him up for it. Ok, sorry that's the 1st funny part, being at a rock concert and all. Anyway about that time, an unaware big ol' boy was to their left watching the show and unknowingly engulfed the two with a huge cloud of smoke. They didn't say anything to him.
The music was great, the crowd a little rowdy.
Happy Birthday Carol,
I believe we met briefly at a Dickey Betts show at Freebirds, jax beach around '99-'00
