Saw Derek last night with Clapton with Brent, John B'ham and Sheep. I was odd man out because IMHO Derek seemed flat. I don't think he played flat but he was down in the mix. Clapton definitely had the tone and volume. The first 5 or so tunes were all D& D but I wish they had more volume. People around me loved Derek. Personally, I like the ABB take on Layla better then Clapton. I remember being at the Beacon and as Derek played the hairs on my arms stood up. Well, they didn't last night. It could be because on the original Duane was lower in the mix then Derek with the ABB. It was great musically but you know when a guitarist has that tone that just pierces your sole.... Derek did not have it. The entire group of us sat in different locations and I don't think this caused my sound problem. I just don't know... I was looking forward to it and it was a good show. But maybe my expectations were too high or once you see a Derek show or a Derek in the Allmans show you cannot go back. I've seen Derek with P & F. In fact, I saw his first show in Lansing and then a later show.... I thought his tone was better even then. Tone might not be the proper word because the more I think about it, it could have been volume and mix. Peace and love--scotty
